I started running seriously about 3 years ago' date=' use neutrals and have run up to marathon distance in:

Asics Cumulus - light, soft, not as durable as I'd like

New Balance 1060 - good support and comfort, toebox design chafed

Brooks Radius - current, my favourite - not at all plush, but comfortable. Good wear so far.

My wife has been through several pairs of Asics 2110 plus orthotics.

This suggests that there's more than one answer to the question.

Common factor in all of these: The Cape Runner.

P.S. A good podiatrist helps too.

Yes and a good bio kinetist.

I dont understand why more people dont use orthotics, when I lived in the US I visited many specialist running podiatrists and all of them were pro orthotics, although here I find them a bit iffy - well the ones I have seen anyway.

In fact I did a test once where the podiatrist asked me to stand upright in my bare feet, with arms outstretched to the front,  he then exerted downward / sideways pressure on my arms and I was quickly thrown off balance.

Inserting special orthotics for my foot type we repeated the test, there was NO WAY I could be thrown off balance, he could have virtually hung on my arms, such is the value of specifically designed orthotics.

What sort of injury is/ was it Racer x?

Running at 15/16 kms per hour is very fast for a runner with just 3months of training in the joints and tendons, especially if you had a prior injury.

Muscle can cope with a sudden extra work load but joints, tendons and cartilage cant, it takes a long time to strengthen them enough to support that kind of work load.

A "thoing" sound is ominous, you could have torn a ligament, although I dont  think so as you seem to be walking around, probably, you have overworked the joints more than anything else and they are swollen and painfull.

Take it slower and work upwards, I am sure you will be fine.

It appears this post is in jepordy of degenerating into a "brand" argument which is not what Pantani was asking about initially.

Actually' date=' Pantani appears to have lost interest in the post.!

No I haven't, I have read every response, just have not got involved because I'm not a road shoe guru! But I'm reading, going to The Runner in Fourways this afternoon... Embarrassed

So Pantani, did you drop in at "The Runner", did you "run" out with a nice pair of shoes, or did you chicken out?Big%20smile

Spill the beans now.!

Hey Pantani,

I can't wait to see the pictures of your new white shoes with the gold stripes, gold shoe laces and the custom embroidery work in gold: "king of Bling". I think you can also get carbon look toe and heel end covers for shoes as well. LOL

Just remember though, I think you are also not allowed to cross the white line in Road Running LOL

A few years back a ran competively in fell running races around my area. It thus wasn't very hard to get back into it especially as I just ran on the road and not in the bush. I admit I only ran 15.8 km in an hour, once, 2 weeks a ago. Normally sat around 14 Kmph. The knee injury occurred whilst fell running I tore the tendon on the outer side of my right knee and damaged the cartilidge in my knee its self. This is why I initially gave up running my present injury was a light pull so I stopped walked home and hid my running shoes. I don't want to experience pain like that again.
