If I caught that "mechanic" working on my fork with a screw driver and a carpenter's hammer I would definitely find another bike shop...

You are rtight, he sshould be using a 4lb and a wood chisel....!

The bike shop had removed the crown to use on the new fork! The bike isn't all togther yet so there has been no-one riding the dodgy thing, it just felt rough and loose when I kept trying to get some preload on the bearings. I assumed the crown was actually part and parcel of the fork and was not part of the headset (if that makes senses).

Thanks to West Rand Cycles I got a second hand one that will work just fine.

Christmas will be spent putting the bike back together so a friend can do the Xterra with me in Jan.

they removed the crown? off an RS Dart??? I'm very surprised the crown is removable! Went back to a 2007 RS service manual, and it's only the Boxxer/Dual crown forks that have removable upper and lower crowns.

CROWN RACE - Gentlemen, PLEASE!

If the OP had read through the Goggled article CAREFULLY he may have seen that it is called such.

Amateurs, I was thinking more along the lined of a 9" grinder and if necessary, an oxy/acetylene set.
