2011 GT Avalanche 2.0 , Is the price right?

Hey peeps,

I'd just like to know if what I have been quoted is ballpark for a new but discontinued bike:

I've been quoted R 5000 for a 2011 GT Avalanche 2.0 new. I have done a bit of research online and I have seen 2012 GT Avalanche 2.0's for around the R 5900 - R 6000 mark, and the 2012 Avalanche 3.0's at around R 4700 to R 5000, and so the price for the 2011 still seems a little high.

I'd appreciate some advice! :)

That seems about right, my mate just paid R5300 for the 2011 GT Avalanche 2.0

OKay cool, thanks for the reply. How does he find the bike? :)

Hey man, from my side, thats a good price but maybe you can squeeze it a bit. My mate bought that bike a few months back and paid R5000 too. Good strong entry level bike, cant go wrong. Its done full Hill2Hill and plenty big races without a problem and he weighs about 90.

That's about right, my old man has just bought a 2012 GT Avalanche 1.0 for R8000, dropped to R7300 for cash sale. If you are paying cash haggle for a discount. He is loving his new bike. Bit heavyish but they can take a beating!!

Cool, thanks for all the feedback. I'm pretty excited!

I will try and see if I can get a cash discount, I'm also buying two bikes so that should count for something!

What should I expect to spend on the necessary gear? Helmet, gloves etc?

Maybe budget another R1000 or slightly more for helmet, gloves, a sweat band, water bottles, water bottle cages, spare tube, puncture kit, pump/co2 cartridge, some chain lube, spare quick link (8 & 9 speeds are different) maybe a multi tool if you can stretch to that now?

Another nice to have for this time of year but not necessary is a mud guard on the front.

Speak to the shop owner and see what they can give you to sweeten the deal or your extras at a more favourable price.

Cool, thanks. I'm budgeting about a grand for the initial equipment. I'm hoping people got the hint for Xmas and I'll get some stuff too though, haha.. ;)

I'll try and negotiate a discount when I'm at the store a little later.

And if you are on roads at dusk/early morning, a couple of lights front and back. Cheap but could save you some trouble later.

Will do.

So I picked up my bike yesterday, it's great!

I managed to get the deal a bit sweeter with some discounts on some helmets and other accessories.

I'm pretty chuffed!
