Thats a recumbent mountain bike! I've never seen one before and have to say that it makes no sense at all. On the road, yes, with better aerodynamics, it makes sense. But on the mountain, where aerodynamics is less important, I don't see the point. I also don't see it negotiating single track. What would it be used for then?

Here towards the end of the year I started longing back to my student days when we has organised racing in single speed "quad- cycles". And having 17km of gravel roads in a nature reserve behind the house is motivation for me to get a mountain tricycle.

Since it seems that this isn’t available here locally, what about road versions?

I can just see this rider smiling with dirt on his teeth

Looks like alot of fun, especially on some fast downhill jeep track.

I wonder how much fun it could be riding a tricycle on jeep track. The rear wheel will always track on the middelmannetjie giving you the roughest ride of your life.

I actually don't see a use for his trike at all??

True that, make that an ultra smooth graded dirt road then.

Ah, in this sense I may be lucky with living were I do. Compacted Renosterveld roads do not have middelmannetjies, like you may have up in Gauteng. Riding the gravel roads and trails of the West Coast National Park or even the numerous farm roads of the West Coast, Swartland and Boland will be enough for me.

Is it not that the terrain will dictate the type of vehicle to use? And in using your knowledge of the area you will be able to strategically plan your route with what vehicle is available to you? Taking this into account, a mountain bike type of trike makes a lot of sense to me.

It seems to be that my tinkering project for the year will be to build an off-road trike. Only the road versions are available in SA and importing from the USA… A Prado would be cheaper. :D

Thanks to all

You are lucky indeed. If you have the right terrain/roads, that looks like one fun veehaicle to ride.

Post your finished project here, I'll come and visit you for a spin.
