Nice topic & pic, to raise awareness of the situation, which leads to grumpy and irate road-users.

After trying to advise a handful of cyclists on how to obey certain road-rules, and being sworn-at, shown fancy finger-signals, and having my roof slapped when I pulled away from the next traffic-light, I find it quite amazing how (sometimes!) a few cyclists cycling together think they are more powerful than a few kg's of steel with an engine.

Good thing I'm quite a chilled person, and think I'll stick to my MTB thanks, cos there's not enough tar on SA's roads for all the road-users to share efficiently.

I wish we can separate the 2 issues here.

1. Issue is Road-Rules....I dont think it is anyone's bussiness anymore if a cyclist does obey them or not since so many other road users do not obey them, and people do nothing about it....why only focus on cyclist. Taxi drivers dont give a hoot how they are perceived....so you should do the same.

2. Safety, again people dont care if kids are buckled up or not, talking on their cellphones etc. So why do you worry about their safety.....leave them alone....Darwin comes to mind....it is their safety and their problem not yours/mine

I have decided that in 2012 I will not care if the taxi's push in, overtake on the left....women on cellphone, kid not in safety belt...it is not my problem. I am only looking after myself. I have tried before to make a difference, only to be shot down.

Just enjoy being on the road....with your bike.

Of course it does, but the same argument applies to ANY other road user.

If some knob, and there are plenty on the roads, decides to run me down because he has a bad encounter with another cyclist, then it's the mentality of that person, all he needed was an excuse. Respect or otherwise.

Non of this deals with the core issue of general cyclist fatalities, taking just this week for example, how do either those relate to the point made?

The question of respect needs to be across the board. If you're a bad driver, that attitude will carry over to whatever other mode of transport you use.

It's amazing that in Europe on narrower roads than here there can be large groups and riders on there own, with far fewer road deaths than here.

Why, because of a general mutual respect.

Which we don't have here, even amongst ourselves.

Very good point, it sould be ALL road users not just cyclists.....

Well, naturally. You think these prize winners in the picture drive their cars with any consideration and respect for other road users.

Morons.

The universe turns people.

Well said JohanRissik and TNT 1. Various questions have been ask,but the one that stands out is:has the OP stopped and advise, ask these cyclist to not block the road ? Come on,can you imagine one motorist , against 15 bulletproof cyclist, the comments, remarks, possibly get ....ked remarks,I can just hear them, also one of the reasons I stopped cycling in big groups as I can see that the ego's can get you in trouble. Flame on !!!
