Hey Guys

I need to replace the rims on my DH bike. They are cracking through where they were welded and I think it is time they were replaced. I was wondering who in Cape Town would stock something like that

If anyone has suggestions about places to try or what rims to get that would be helpfull as well. I was considering getting Mavic 2012 EX729 Disc Rims from CRC if I cant find something similar locally. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=71053 . The reviews on MTBR sounded good.

Anyway thanks in advance for the help.

If you are looking at going the online route look at superstar components. They are K@K cheap and as far as I know pretty good.

Hi Melch, Mavic rims are pretty cool but I dont think you can import any Mavic products from CRC to South Africa, not sure of the reason but probably something to do with them having a special arangement with Mavic to only distribute in the EU. Some other online stores have this same rule.

If you order a complete custom built wheelset then the above may not apply though, and sometimes this makes more sense than buying rims locally and also paying for the wheelbuild, so you might want to check this option out aswell.

Hey Marius, you are right about the Mavic rims. Not sure how I missed that.

CRC also has some sun ringle DH rims. They stock a 31mm and a 33mm version. Do you guys no what width rims you are running? Not sure which one to get, the 33mm is out of stock so if I want to order soon that solves that problem.

I had a look at superstar components but all there rims are 32 hole and I ned 36 hole. Anyway they look like they worth keeping in mind for next time.

The rule applies to all Mavic "components", but CRC are sometimes fine with not adhering to it. I got a freehub body from them last year, even though it specifically stated "only in the EU". I just asked nicely :)

melch, get a wider rim if possible. Get some good volume out of a 2.35 tire, and thus some good traction without a weight penalty.

For DH

Mavic EX 325, 721, 823 (UST), 729 (in order of increasing weight)

Stan's ZTR flows

Others to consider for a strong wheel, albeit not labelled specifically for DH, but can take the knocks:

Mavic EN521 (enduro), XM 317 (all-mountain)
