I dunno about that... Having ridden both grouppo's for a while I think the Ultegra is pretty good and can't complain about it, sh*tfing is precise and smooth. For me it works just as well as Dura Ace. I think keeping the groupset well maintained helps too and the Ultegra is certainly more rugged than the Dura Ace. If you're not the sort of rider who buys a new groupset every year then I would go for the Ultegra...

Yes, quite true BMC, if you prepared to spend Dura Ace money then you may as well buy Campy Record. I'm also contemplating going the Campy Record route.

If you are fortunate enough to consider buying either, then I'd say go for the Dura Ace. Its always gonna be in the back of your mind if you buy the Ultegra...remember, we are cyclists...the most vain of all God's creations.

 

I have had both the 10speed Ultegra, and Dura Ace and there is a big difference...

Some parts are worth it. The rear mech seems to work just little bit better than the Ultegra version for example - could be better jockey wheels.

Dura Ace STIs feel just that much better as well. The pedals and front mech don't seem worth it compared to Ultergra.

 

The brake calipers are a bit nicer but I bet if you put Dura Ace pads on the Ultegra one's it wouldn't be any different.

 

The Dura Ace cranks I would recommend, they are lighter but the most important difference is they are forged and as a result are stiffer and stay that way.

 

If its just for racing I'd go Dura Ace but if you need to do your training on it as well Ultegra or Ultegra SL will wear cheaper or better, depending how you look at it!

 

The differences are smaller and smaller the higher up the "food chain" you go, but if you can afford the whole set up do it! Like they say: "How fast do you want to spend?"

 

Think about SRAM Rival too, lighter than Ultegra but should wear better than Dura Ace. Force is even better, maybe not the cranks though. Red is super yummy!

I've just upgraded to DA and to be absoluetly honest you can probably spend the money better elsewhere (better wheels for eg). Having said that though DA is really nice, partic the crankset which just feels a lot stiffer.

If you have the money to spend on DA and you plan on racing then that has to be the way to go.

DA is lighter, stiffer, stronger and in my experience more durable than Ultegra. DA also has more bling factor if you are that way inclined.

 

My recommendation is if you race or plan on racing seriously, go for DA. If you are more of a social rider or a sub-4 hour argus is your goal then Ultegra is for you.

 

Good luck, either way you can go wrong with Shimano no matter what the Scampies say

The best between ultegra and dura-ace is chorus. actually I would rate it better than dura-ace, but that is just my 2c

 

if you want better than dura ace, buy record.
