Rims for trail bike

Pittstop

Recommended Posts

Looking at building up a set of wheels for a trail bike. Looking at lightweight with a bit of strength. Currently looking at Notubes ZTR Arch or Mavic 819 rims. Are there any others I should look at, or any comment on either of these?

Mavic 819's are good. I was going to get some from CRC, but they won't send Mavics to SA. Where would you get them from?

You not interested in simply buying a full wheelset? If so, Mavic Crossmax ST's are really nice for trail riding.

...or if you want to go a little stronger, the Crossmax SX seem pretty cool. I have a set on my new bike... but I'm still waiting on CRC parts, so haven't ridden the bike yet.

Rim: Arch or Flow

Wheel: ST for not so hard riding, SX for more aggressive stuff

Or buy my I9 wheelset for cheap cheap:

http://www.thehubsa....-nine-wheelset/

+1 for the ZTR Flow

+-130g heavier than Crest (on 26" 32 hole).

So total 260g heavier with the same build as on a set of Flow's.

Flows are MUCH stronger, and as you mention trail riding, well...

So, the weight issue...

1. Before you go rige, take a pee, and shed yourself of 350ml (350g of weight).

2. Fill one of your bottles (or Camelback) with JUST as much as you need, and save anything from 325ml (352b per half a bottle), to 1.5l (1.5kg per half Camelback),

And there you have anything from a 350g to a 1.5kg of weight saving.

WELL worth the additional 260g you will carry on MUCH safer, stronger and longer lasting Flow's.

I hope this helps eek.gif

Oh yes, wanted toi mention;

I ride a set of ZTR Flow's (29") on Hope Pro II evo hubs with DT Swiss spokes, and they are STRONG and stiff. Well worth the effort :)

Weight difference between Flow vs old gen Arch is 50g per rim (470g vs 420g). New Arch EX drops another 20g per rim so weight difference is now 70g per rim.

So you only need to take half a pee.biggrin.png

Dragon Sports distribute Mavic stuff in SA. So.

Go to www.dragons.co.za and look at their dealer list. Then contact one/many of the shops for a price.

Would get the wheelset but is a little steep for me at the moment and am building the wheels up slowly as cash permits.

I did look at Flow rims, and might just go that route to have common wheels between the trail and AM bike (Flows on Hope II's)

  • 3 months later...

I'm pretty hard on wheels because I'm not a light weight. So I got CRC to build me a real overkill wheelset:

Spank Subrosa (white) with Hope Pro II (blue). :D

What do you guys think of the following:

WTB Laserdisc Trail:

• Size - 26″

• Weight - 500g

• ERD - 542

• Hole - 32

R 400-00

OR

ZTR flow

  • ISO - 559x22.6
  • ERD - 536mm
  • Weight - 470g

  • R750-00

  • post-4006-0-85170000-1334841576.jpg

  • Is the extra R350 per rim worth it for the ZTR Flow?

  • The plan is to build a wheelset with Hope Pro 2 Evo hubs, DT Competition Spokes and brass nipples.
