Broken Metacarpel... :(

So after I took my MTB in for a service last week Wednesday, I take her out for a ride to 'test' all is cool!

Attempting to 'mount' a pavement sideways and not straight on, stupid I know, I bail off and hurt my hand!

Hoping for the best, like a sprain, I don't got to the ER straight away. But after two hours of pain I was taken to Wilgeheuwel by my GF. Turns out I broke my 5th Metacarpel in my right hand.

According to the specialist I have what is similar to a 'boxers fracture'! Going in later this morning for them to straighten the bone and what sounds like a pin to be inserted.

So I'm outta action for a few weeks! :(

Anyone else suffered a similar injury? How long where you out for? Any precautions you take when riding now? An not falling has been taken into consideration :P

Really want to do the Sabie Classic I posted about the other day but that does not look possible now! *sighs*

Sorry to hear about your hand!

I once broke two knuckles on my right hand and had the doctor wrap up everything he needed to except and thumb and index figer - this allowed me to do all my regular daily and weekend activites.

Recovery time for that was just over or just under two months.

Wish you a speedy recovery bud!

Broke my hand as well, started riding with hand in splint and compression bandage/support type thing. Did not really think about falling. Sorry about Sabie - what distance were you going to do? Maybe look at doing a shorter distance slowly just for the fun of it.

I had the exact same thing happen in my right hand.

boxers fracture.

I shattered the fifth metacarpel and had to have a plate and 5 screws permanently inserted.

It took 6 weeks after the op to get most of the mobility back.

Now it hurts like hell in the cold.

I also had to change my golf grip from interlocking to baseball style...i am still trying to get back my golf game.

It didnt really effect my riding much.

Good luck.

Probably K-wires from the lateral side of your hand, 2 or 3.

Suppose to stay in for 6 weeks....

Mine irritated me after 4....pulled it out with pliers, just get someone to hold you hand back :)

No worries, it'll heal well, if not shattered like wayne_potgieter all functionality will be normal.

Next time fall open palms!!

All the best with the op!

I did the same with my right hand, falling off a bike while training.

Orthdeadic surgeon told me that at my age he can put pins in or not, the result will be the same.

Chose to forego the op, and had to wear a brace for 8 weeks.

The hand hurts like hell in the cold, sometimes making it difficult to write or hold anything.

My hand still looks funny with the knuckle not being where it is supposed to be.

Good luck with your injury, and hope you have a full recovery.

plan for 8 weeks off the bike. I tried to do some spinning in my 8 weeks off but you sweat like hell under the half cast, and it does start to smell a bit! I crushed my tendons so had to go the op route but had it not been for the tendons could have had a brace and would have been the same result. After 12 months my knuckles are still swollen. Like everyone else also feel it in winter........

Thanks for the well wishes and advice everyone!!

'Op' went well! I now have a permanent pin in my hand to match my IM pins in my arm and leg, all on the right side (Previous injuries from a car accident.) So I am well balanced now... :)

Nothing temporary about it... :(

In a cast type thing and doc warned me not to do anything stupid till he sees me next week to have stitches taken out. Said to me minimum 6 weeks outta action! :cursing:

Was doing the 40km...Don't know if I will be ready yet! Don't want to start too soon though either. Will see Doc see for follow up visit.

Gotta work on those mounting skills, man....

Seriously, get better soon!

Yeah I know! lol! Thanks man!

Dumbass...

Who needs friends when you have cycling buddies like this?

Keep those legs spinnin' on the ol' stationary bike!

Heal quick and get back out there from April Fool's Day.
