After messing with the chain cleaners I also went the SRAM link route. Much better. I use degreaser in a flat dish, stiff paint brush. Also do the cassette removal. You can really get into the derailleurs and the dark side of the main chain rings with the chain off the bike.

I own a chain cleaning tool too but it is never used anymore although it is a must if you don't remove the chain.

Williehond use it sparingly if you use a paint brush and just spin it through and then rinse it off then youre singing' date=' if you splash parrafin all over your freehub then you need your head analyzed.

Note: Did not direct this to williehond in person

Hey, if Big H can take the time to be personal so can you!!!!!!!!!!!!

No worries, my point is that I can't sit there and spin it very slowly and be sure not to drip paraffin on the hubs.  Just too slow and painful for me and it never really looks clean to me.  Plus using paraffin might be quick to remove all the gunk, but it cleans and leaves a residu that fights with your lube once you put it on if you don't rinse well, so it's not my favourite way to clean a chain.  I just think the powerlink way is just too damn convenient to ignore.  If you are going to clean i properly remove your chain and cluster and scrub till it's nice and shiny.  Then you don't have to worry about the hubs at all!   Especially if you are a messy cleaner like me.

PS I use Sram Power Links as well and I also have one in the saddlebag, but I fitted it with the chain and has never needed to remove the chain because my clamshell cleaner works soooooo effectively. To get effective use out of the clamshell cleaner you need to wash the chain at least every 200 to 300 km depending on the dirt you encounter.

I agree clamshells are a waste of money, and they spray much dirtyness over the rest of your bike.

To ensure you really get your chain clean and dry (after removing it with the sram powerlink) wash it in thinners and keep replacing the dirty thinners until it stays clean. Hang the chain up and let the thinners evaporate, this will ensure you don't dilute the new lube you put on. Use the same on the rear cluster after you have removed it. KEEPS IT LOOKING BLING BLING.!!!

Have a chain clean shell.  Works well if you have time, but if you have a good lube on your bike you don't have to clean it that much (or am I doing very little training?)

I used the bottle and parafien, but tried the tool, and it works well, but if you want to do a good job, take everything off inc jockey gears and clean them.  You will feel the reward..

i have one of them clam thingies but dont use it anymore Big%20smile I got me a sram powerlink , a 5 litre water bottle ceres still with the nice wide neck, and 2 liter of parrafin.

remove the chain drop it into the empty 5 liter bottle add bit of parrafine close bottle and shake .

whala you hook it out with a bit of wire and you got a shiney clean chain.
