Or is this normal?

I went out for a 60km training ride yesterday morning from Strand to Rooi Els and back. This was this furthest I have trained so far on a bike. My core fitness is OK I guess for an average guy as I also do Surfski paddling. I maintained around 25km/h for the first 55km and felt great. I also attacked the little bumps by standing up in the saddle. However, the last 5km were tough and it felt like I just could not maintain more than 20km/h on the flat. Also, a few hours atfer the ride I started feeling nausia and generally run down.

I ate a low GI porridge for breakfast before the ride, during the ride I used PVM Octane, and used PVM Fusion for a recovery drink.

Is there something that I did wrong? What must I do to prevent this? Is this just normal when going further and this is just a way that your body reacts?

I am 45, weigh 78 and is 1.83m tall. So am just the average middle aged bloke.

BTW, just wanted to add that this is the first year that I started to do cycling events, and yes, I am about to do my first Argus. Also wanted to add that my legs felt great after this all, it is just something to do with my nutrition or the way my body uses it's reserves.

Might have bonked? More training and further distances. That road is quite hectic especially from Rooiels side! Just climbs all the way back to the Strand.

Rest one day and do another ride the following day.

You sound like a pretty new rider? You probably just got tired buddy, no need to go call it bonking. I wouldn't over analyse or get scientific about it, just keep doing what you are doing, and it will get better with time.

Pretty new yes. Rode bikes a lot when I was younger, but never did proper cycling. I could probably have been a good rider if I used what the good Lord has given me 30 years ago. I have pretty good cycling legs.

It's funny how you wake up in your middle years and actually start living and appreciate what you have, and then realize you had been given a talent and never used it.

IF thats all you ate before, during and for a few hours after the ride then thats probably why you felt Nauseous and generally run down. I would suggest something solid to eat after a ride like that and maybe a something to nibble on during the ride as well.

Could be nutrition, could be that you attacked the bumps OUT OF THE SADDLE, and assume in a big gear.

Sit my man, drop that gear low low and spin. We are not 20 anymore. Trust in Armstrong and spin them pins.

How hot was it out there today, plays a big role in the nausia dept.

More base mile and less hammering until you get the legs to do so.

Keep it up......the fittness will come!

Thanks for the input.

Next time I will have a nice juicy steak after the ride. And yes, I attacked that bumps out of the saddle at least 2 gears higher compared to when I spin in the saddle. There is a hill just after the Steenbras bridge on the way to Kogelbaai that I attacked out of the saddle a few times in between sitting and just spinning along. It is about 3km long and I felt fine after it. But I guess, as someone once put it in a movie: "Your ego is writing cheques that your body can't cash!".

But I will keep at it. I am getting better at the climbing each time I do it.

Yeah I heard that too, but also heard that "40 is the new 30", so it seams we're young again!

Just thought I should report back. I went for another ride to Rooi Els this morning, Only this time I also tackled the hill just after Rooi Els. What a mother! You think that right hand turn is the top of the hill but it just keeps on going up. Anyway, I feel much better now, also did not get that cycling into a wall feeling. I used one energy bar and one gu today.

I only struggled today on that first hill just after the Steenbras bridge on the way to Kogelbaai, but after that I was fine on the hills, even coming back. So my average did not improve but I blame that extra hill I did. I will keep doing this ride weekly.
