I'm 1,95m tall, hoping to do the ride in +-16,5hrs. This will be the only bike for the future in the garage.

Then a 29er dual it is (as much as that pains me to say).

Lived in the Karoo most of my life and I would think that those district roads will not have changed much, i.e. they will be serioulsy corrugated. So maybe try and get an opinion from someone who actually has ridden those roads, or lives in the area, because I'm thinking you might need an ass transplant at the end if you're riding a hardtail!

Can I do it in on bike with no suspension? Just spend a lot of money on a proper road bike so have to do it old on my old bike. May not mortgage the house for a bike apparently.

It can be done on a tricycle, ... question is do you really want to?

Hard tail 29er. No brainier..

I ride a light carbon FS 26" and a HT Cannondale Flash 29er - both just over 10kg. The Flash frame and seat post use Cannondale's SAVE technology which has quite a bit of give - approx 3cm, which together with the lower pressure you can run on the 29er tyres (and of the course the awesome Lefty), result in a very compliant ride and I reckon the difference on rutted or rough roads is negligible. But, IMO the long haul cruising advantage of the big wheel settles the debate - esp on ultra-marathons.

Did TB last year on a Scott Genius dual and a very similar ride this year on a Silverback Sierra HT with fox f100 fork... Cannot comment on 29ers but imo a dual is definately the way to go... Genius locks out completely in the back and front and has different travel settings... The ideal all rounder :)
