MTB in and around Umtata.

My son needs to spend 2 months in Umtata. Anyone know of any safe places to cycle?

umtata is not the place for mtb but go to the hole best you can find

There is a gravel road that goes to the dam and a few tracks around their but Umtata isn't the safest place to ride.

Been there for the last 6 weeks, take an IDT. Wouldnt ride there alone. (alone meaning <10)

there is some brilliant riding out Ugie way. still a small travel, but might be worthwhile to take some weekends out there. Good fly-fishing too if he is into that. I could find out some more info about trails there if you want

 

edit: I see Maclear has some trails too - Prentjiesberg Mountain Bike Trail, Wintermatten Holiday farm

I agree, worked there for about 3 years. It might appear that there are plenty tracks, but alone, not so sure. Maybe he can go down to Port St Johns and train there, more touristy and nice climbs.

 

Otherwise maybe Ugie, Maclear way.

I'm in East London, worked in Umtata for a year and as nice as the trails are I would never ride there unless in a large group!!

 

If your son wants to come ride in EL please PM me and he is more than welcome to ride my favourite trails, I'll also try and match him up with someone who is of similar strength to train with as I am just getting back in the saddle.
