duties on helmets are not 40%, also, you canot factor in the VAT as the agent claims the bulk of that Back, hence it is value added tax.

If you wait for clearance sales then most internet sites have up-to 60% off their already lower than SA prices.... so screw the duties and taxes and import and warranty costs etc...

Good luck with importing a Specialized product. If you succeed in buying the Spez helmet online, please pop me a pm so that I can also shop there please.

If you shop at JormaBike they will

I buy alot of stuff (particularly Specialized) overseas as I have connections in the US and the UK. The reason I do it though is product range and availability because the local crowd are pretty useless. Although hopefully that will change now that Specialized have come in directly but the evidence of that remains to be seen.

The bikes and frames are pretty much the same price in the US and the UK as the are here so unless you find a real bargain it is not worth the bother. The clothes, shoes and helmets and significantly cheaper overseas and worth getting if you can but if you're going to have them shipped and you end up paying import duties and VAT then they are not. The only way it works out cheaper is if you have a mate who can bring them back for you.

I sort of agree with you here.

BUT If something happens to that helmet are you going to take it to the agents here? Why should they help you? I know lots of people who bring in their own stuff. Don't then go to the agents and cry when something happens. That only makes it more expensive for me to buy their product here because they have to factor in all these costs as well. You might not agree with me here, but from what I hear Specialized have very specific rules on this kind of thing.

Let's put it differently. I go overseas and I see a helmet I like. I buy it there and bring it back. Are you telling me that if something happens to the helmet I can't take it to the local agent?

Welcome to the global economy!

All agents will ask you for a proof of purchase when dealing with warrenty so you will have problems if bought overseas.

No was for real stringbean... She knew what i was looking for.. Prevail is R3000 there..

I highly doubt that they will lower the costs, they will probably keep the same price and end up getting more profit..

My apple products are guaranteed here.. So why shouldnt specialized products be??

So, I discovered this weekend that the Specialized Propero 2 helmet goes for R2000 in South Africa, and in the USA it goes for R700.

Can u really tell me that a 140% increase in price is correct just because its being brought in from a different country..

I think they're taking a fat chance..

I told the lady at concept cyclery the deal and she said it had something to do with the government... Im not so sure about that..

So i did you a favour Fruity and called Concept and while i agree they don't know thier ass from thier elbow a propero 2 sells for R1400 from them.

Serious?? Well thanks for doing me that favour.. :D well clearly the woman who works there does know her ass from her elbow for sure!!!!.. She definitely said R2000...

I think I still might get it abroad though..
