The saddle on my old, now spare, Marin MTB just won't stay set even if I crank the clamp down hard. Even tried a new clamp but no use.

I'm thinking over the years it's got worn, and hence is slightly too loose to fit the sea tube well.

Would it work / be sacrilege to just wrap some thin insulating tape or something around the post, to give it some more width to clamp against?

It's a spare bike that friends use occasionally so not sure it's worth the cost of a new seat post really.

Are you sure they're the same diameters?

Even though it's only 0.7mm difference a 30.9mm seatpost will slip in a 31.6mm seatpost tube.

As for the insulation tape... not ideal. If you need to "beef up" the seatpost Try making a shim out of a coke can. Alternatively if you do have something like a 30.9mm seatpost that you want to put in a 31.6mm frame, USE makes shims for that and many other combos. Not so cheap though (cost me about R200) after shipping... but if it's a case like mine... it beats buying another Reverb Seatpost at R2500

Happened to me once during a race, pulled the post out and stuck it into the nearest puddle (muddy part) and then re-installed it.

Worked.

Carbon paste might be better than mud n sand tho...

Or

Try roughen up the seat post and seat tube inerface areas without removing any more material or cleaning the resultant filings and add carbon paste.

Or

Get some thin shim stock from a hardware shop, wrap it around and TRY install post with shim stock in place...LOL can be challenging to get them both in without jorking the shim stock...

Cut a shim from a beer can.

But then I'd need an empty can ... which means I'd need to drink some beer ..... ah, nice idea, I like !

Definitely right size - tube and post are the original ones the bike came with and were fine for few years. Only started slipping recently.

Will try the shim route first I think - nice and easy, and means I get excuse to drink some beer ;)
