I'm fairly new to the triathlon scene - was wondering if it is possible to do/finish the Ironman with a mountain bike? With some of the weights of mountain bikes nowadays (less than 12kg) could the ironman be possible?

Ability/Possibility is not gauged by the bike, you can do it on a uni-cycle if you really want to. But ironman rules obviously states that you have to do it on a road or tri bike.

the rules do not allow for that.from a hypothetical point of view i think you will run out of gears, the nobblies will wear off, aerodynamics will kill you,etc etc.i cannot for one moment think why you would want to do it on a mtb.if you really really want to do it go x terra.as for ironman it is tuff enough without making it tougher by choice.

Physically it is possible, there are plenty of guys who have ridden the DC on mtb, but to me it would be a bit like self flagellation rather get a road or Tri bike out there and hammer it. If you really want to do an IM distance tri there are other events out there that may allow you to enter on your MTB if you really want to

In 2000 and 2001 there was a Ironman in Gordons Bay and there were stacks of guys on mtb that finished.
