Try www.easygis.co.za when you are ready. I bought from them. Best price and great overnight delivery.

+1 for that. Loving it and had no issues besides not reading enough into the product, but thankfully we have the hub to get ALL the answers one needs.

Ive been using the 500 without the speed sensor for years (and the 305 prior to that also without the speed sensor) without issues, inaccuracy or any problems.

The GPS does its job ... I only use cadence on all my bikes.

Garmin forums are generally just a beaching session. Very little people goes to a support forum to say they're happy... So take everything you read there in that light.

Very true - if I'd taken them seriously, I'd never have bought the 500.

Now I've got one, I can't believe how so many people can struggle with it so much. For me, it's been darned near ideal compared to what I wanted from it.

Depends which one you go to. The SA one, yes beaching session and a bunch of old toppies with a "do a software upgrade" answer to every problem mentality. Their second most favorite reply ... "it cant be done"

The international forum, much better, I have found plenty of clever solutions there from helpful guys and even from Garmin developers themselves

If both the sensor and the GPS is picked up, the garmin calibrates the sensor to the gps, so either way, you will be spot on. The garmin is the best i've had ever. The only k@k thing about the edge 500 is that you cannot upload courses like with the edge 305, but at least it has none of the older version's issues.

I'm pretty sure you can upload files and follow them Edited by Caerus

Read that too - no mapping, but can follow uploaded courses. Haven't tried it, sure it was in manual though.

Have you tried that then when the sensor goes on the blink (slipped magnet etc)? I setup mine with a wheel measurement not auto, and when the magnet slipped the GPS didn't take over for speed/distance. Garmin told me it couldn't, but I haven't tried it with Auto for wheel size though. I'm guessing a magnet going out of alignment during a ride will still cause bad readings.

Not with the 500

G

I haven't tried this ... but ... p33 (Data Management section) of the full users manual (PDF) i got with mine describes how to load .tcx and .fit files to the unit.

p14 also describes following a course too.

I'm guessing the two can join up and you can follow a course that was uploaded, not just one you captured and saved from the unit itself.

Like I say - haven't tried it though
