I am in the process of getting myself a giant bike. The rims and tyres are stock standard - Maxxis Crosmark 29 X 2.1 with Giant P - XC2 rims. The dealer told me that the tyres is not compatable to go tubeless on these rims and therefor have to get UST tyres if I want to change to tubeless. Since then I establish on the the hub through other people coments that the dealer want to roll me some dung and that is apparently possible to convert Maxis Crosmark 29 x 2.1 tires to the Giant P - XC2 rims tubeless.

Since the dealer don't want to assist me, I decided to do it myself. (Here come a thing and I don't want Mrs. Mountainbiker to think I don't know about this DIY thing)

Now the big question:

What would your recomment.....Stans or Ghetto tubeless? I do have a 150l compressor at home. Please keep in mind that I am in the bushes and bike shops not very close just to pop in and out. The only tubeless that I can get my hand on is Stans or the Ghetto system.

Your thoughts on this will be highly appreciated.

Not sure where the Maxxis Crossmark tires are coming from but all three the X0, X1 and X2 2012 models comes out with Racing Ralph Tubeless Ready tires. Are you buying and older model?

There are Maxxis Crossmark tires on some other bikes that is quite rightly so not tubeless. You dont want to convert those to tubeless, they are not even tubeless ready.

If you do decide to go the DIY route, get proper UST tires and save yourself a lot of trouble. Stans works best but with those Giant XC wheelset, avoid the black rubber rim strip, it gives the tire bead less place to grip on the rim wall. Just use the yellow rim tape with tubeless valves and off you go!

I did a tubeless conversion this past weekend with Maxxis Crossmark UST 29er tyres onto my PXC2 rims. I used the black strips and had a major fight to get the tyres on.

I dread being in the situation where I can't plug a hole and have to put a tube in to get me home. So would agree with Tankman to only use tape if you go that route and opt for UST Crossmarks.

I also have a set of new Maxxis Crossmark standard tyres, ie. non-UST or tubeless ready. They fit so loosely I doubt they would make for a good tubeless conversion, although with proper rim strips you might get them inflated and to hold with Stans. Problem with that though, in my opinion, is the side walls are very thin and depending on the terain they may let you down, not just from a sidewall cut.

I guess it's a bit of an experiment with the only risk being some Stans liquid to be lost and maybe a long walk home  . Just carry some bombs and a spare tube.

I haven't ever tried to do a Ghetto conversion so can't comment on that.

Using non-ust rubber WILL fail at some stage, bike shops even sign disclaimers if you wish to use normal foldable tyres as tubeless, cheap yes, till it comes of the rim and you need to have teeth replaced.

converting Stans vs Ghetto, just go stans tried tested and proven.

I converted my Anthem 29er wheels myself after having endless hassles with the tape type conversions once I had experienced flats. I changed to the Bontrager black "hoops" and found that my tyres seated very easily. Also as they use loose valves you wont have to remove them if you need to make use of a tube,as long as the tube has a reasonable valve length.

I am running a Hutchinson Python upfront and a Mountain King at the back.

1500 km's and no problems with burps like when I used rimtape. Can now run much lower pressures and still experimenting .

Don`t think you need full ust though, maybe tubeless ready will do? But yes I would not use those Crossmarks tubeless, and the ust ones weigh a ton, get a pair of Ikons Exo.

Thank you everybody for your comments. I will for now just use the bike with tubes and slime, and change to tubeless when i need to replace tyres.
