+1 for Coral Wetsuits.

They aren't the most advanced suits but are very reasonably priced, custom fit and last forever. I use them for surfing wetsuits though.

I have asked about swimming at the gym with a wetsuit quite a bit as well. Have been told by some of the wetsuit manufacturers that swimming a couple of times will be fine if you rinse out the suit well. BUT over a period of time the chlorine will damage the wetsuit. So don't use a fancy wetsuit at the gym, rather use a cheap and nasty that you don't mind damaging.

Hiya

I would like to ask, why would you if you could?

I swim at Cape Gate, after the second lap, coldness is not an issue. If you wear a wetsuit, you will boil in that water. Be careful of dehydration.

Having said that though. One thing I am thinking about is swimming in a public swimming pool (Sea Point Pavilion), but the chlorine was a concern. Glad someone answered it. Stick to the sea for me then (Now thats cold).

The gym pool definitely isn't cold enough for a wetsuit and I've never actually used the wetsuit at the gym. The only reason I'd want to is to get used to swimming with a wetsuit. The gym is ideal to be able to get comfortable with the fit and get the stroke right and being able to stop if I have to.

The only reason to use it at gym is just to get used to the different position you sit in the water when swimming... Much better to do in open water if you have somewhere to train. Get from Chainreaction is they have your size on special, landed my suit for <R1k (Aquasphere Pursuit which retails for R2,8k here if I remember correctly). Keep in mind you'll be hit with 40% duties and tax when it gets here though...

Hey guys, I am looking at getting into triathlons as well and am looking for a good place in JHB to go and check out the gear required, any reliable places up here?

Thanks

Hi Dale,

Go to Troisport in the Chilli Lane Shopping Centre - off Rivonia.

They have everything and expert advice.

Also if you're hesitant about something, post it here and we'll be glad to give you some advice.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm also in the market and it seems the guys at the tri shop in Hobart centre are pretty keen to do some business.

Are the entry level 2xU suits worth buying or should I just spend another grand or so and get a top end one?

I am just doing sprint distance at the moment and will be moving up to the 5150 in august and then onto the 70.3 for next year. So the suit should last for around two years.

If I was buying with the 70.3 and other big events in mind then I'd spend the extra bit now and buy something decent and is going to last me for a while

Def. Buy a proper suit.

We all doing exactly same as you...

If you have an Extra 500...Spen it on quality!!

I would also like to know more about 2XU wetsuits....

How they get rated etc.??

Because most guys at the Local shops don't really have much to say when I phone an ask around.

All I want to add is that I received some awesome customer service from Terry (Xterra), Terry was very patient (I had several fittings ) and was eager with advice and support. As a beginner this was comforting and the suit is awesome, real value for money

Think you guys maybe right, buy the best one can afford rather than upgrading later.

Is Terry in Johannesburg ?
