Finally making the move to 29er...and have some options to choose from. I am not a race snake nor a aggresive rider to doubt I need to go the full suspension route. Am comparing the following since they all come in at around the same price...

GT Zaskar Elite 9R

vs

Merida Big.Nine TFS XT-D (with a Fox instead of the Recon Silver)

vs

Momsen AL529

What comments and opinions on the above ?

Throwing the Axis A10 full suss into the mix now. That a lot of bike for your bike...

Not totally convinced on the frame, but the Reba does tempt me

KORE cockpit and whellset...any comments ?

The Momsen is good value for money (esp with that ZTR wheeset) but I dont like the look of the frame..that curve on the down tube isnt for me.

The GT is a nice looking bike and frame feels good on a test ride around the parking lot (although this doesnt say much)

Which Scott are you referring to ?

Silverback very good value....Scott Elite if you are after a light bike and it has a Reba fork. I have a Fox fork on my new bike and I am not impressed at all will go back to Rock Shox in a month or two;s time

Scott scale 29 elite.

The Momsen is the best value for money most probably

The scott is ok but remember you will want to rip out that dtswiss at the back and slap in a Rp23 or RS, so add another 4k to the mix.

This was a big week for me. Went from full suspension Giant Anthem 26er to Giant XTC 29er hardtail, from 9 to 10 speed, from SRAM to Shimano shifting and brakes, from Qr in front to thru-axle and tapered headset. WOW a lot has changed in a short time. I do miss my 26er Full Suss. Need to get used to everything. But the speed is awesome.

Went for triple blade crank, dont use the small blade to much. Ride in different gears as to 27 speed. l LOVE my Fox fork. Great for heavy blokes and cheaper on maintenance. if you go for a rear shox I recommend a Fox RP2 or RP23.

I also looked at the Vida1, was afraid of the 20 speed. The rest is awesome. Somebody is selling them on the hub for R15000. The ZTR Crest wheels got a weight limit of 85kgs. I rate these Giant XTC frames. Give CWC a call for a price.

Good Luck. There is to many choices.

Sorry but I don't know who told you a Fox is cheap to maintain but you are in for a suprise they are quite a bit steeper to maintain than a RS

I'll second that!

Had my FOX F100 RLC for 5 years now, cost me a lot less than the RS Reba that I had for 3 years. Send my fork in to Lourens at Cycle Centre for major stuff. He is very affordable.

Took a spin on the Vida2 today and was impessed how it rode, would like to try the Vida1 now.

Only negative i found was with the choice of crest rims which wont suit heavier riders, fit ztr arch and you have a winner.

Value for money I can't see how they can be beat

I have been riding my new momsen sl729 for a month now .Took it for 3 hours at groenkloof yesterday and loved it .I find it easier to stand and pedal tha n my Ds29er.This is a realy great buy.It weighs 11kg for a XL ,The wheelset is rated for 90kg .I weigh 95kg .Wheels took a good bashing with no problems .Xt brakes are the best i have used .2x 10 Xt is enough .I have learnt how to stand and pedal with this bike more than my DS .It is nimble on singletract and stable on downhills.Very happy with this HT.It takes a while to get use to different riding style ,but all for the good !
