Agreed with above, longer stem will get you further forward, but will be even more sluggish.

If you can, removal of a spacer (dropping the bar) will also accomplish what you want. But this may take you out of an optimal hip angle... Worth a try though, instead of investing in stems.

This was recently done to my bike and handles extremely differently! Sure-footed and downright nippy when the footing is solid. I still have to get used to when it's loose gravel beneath the front wheel... it's a little "nervous" then - but just some riding style adjustment (or maybe just a mental adjustment?!) required to nail that as well.

the reason i thought of a longer stem is because at the moment the front wheel feels "heavy" when i move left to right. almost like a delayed reaction.. the weight feels like it right at the front of the wheel. so by moving the stem further forward and bringing the bars more to the center of the wheel... would this not give sharper steering? my bars are pretty wide. about 710mm.

It's a longer lever, therefor you have to move the end-point further to move the centerpoint through the same amount of degrees. (Test on a finger: with the finger fully extened, you have to move it much further to get through a set amount of degrees that when it's folded back and you moce only one digit.)

Therefore, in my mind a longer stem will dampen your reactions.

That's my take on it - I may have a handfull of cat tail and will be open to correction.
