Can it be that the battery is dead after less than a year, maybe 20-30 rides? Will replace anyhow, just trying to figure out what type of life span I should be expecting. G

The battery can die much sooner than that.

Remember when you store the bike, do not leave the pedal with the cadence magnet horizontal right next to the sensor.

Otherwise it is going to be transmitting the signal the whole time, unfortunately the sensor does not know that your Garmin is switched off.

I found the batteries in the Garmin sensors last faaar less than Polar - a few months depending on how much you ride. I got sick and tired of replacing the batteries and have stopped using the Garmin sensor. It means no cadence, but I can live with that.

Follow my advice above and you will not have this problem. I replace my cadence sensor battery once every two years or so, might even be longer I cant even remember, I dont use the speed magnet, thats what the gps is for.

Known issue with Edge 500 - If you have a speed/cadence sensor installed it overrides the GPS, even if it stops working due to alignment slipping or battery dying.

I think you found already you can export a file with just the GPS data in it (GPX I think) to salvage your ride position data. If you had valid cadence data, you can also manually hack the TCX file to strip just the bad speed/distance data but keep the cadence data - it's more of a mission to do that though.
