What to do?

Option A: buy a pair of 5.10 Impacts and continue to ride flats as I have happily been doing

OR

Option B: buy a pair of Shimano AM45s and go clipless! (I've been offered pedals to loan by 3 different people already)

:whistling:

never hurts to try, and given your penchant for Super D/Enduro, i'd say give clipless a go. The mere fact you considering it means it's simply a case of when. So pull the trigger now while u have a choice to settle the matter. But do u have to go with those? Personally, i think they look sif.

looks are subjective - I quite like the Shims, and every one out there riding clipless on AM / DH bikes is wearing Mr Minn's shoes, I like to stand out from the crowd :P

Mr Minns dont look sif. That's why they all wearing em :P

but agreed, all subjective.

So, what you decided to do? I say give it a go. I love both flats and riding clipped in, but I dont think I'll ever ride DH clipped in. I'm just too accustomed to being able to get my foot off for whatever reason. But i did some rough stuff the other day on the XC bike clipped in, and it felt pretty comfortable to the point I started wondering if i shouldn't ride DH with em too. Then I another ride later, i fell at a stop street cos i unclipped the wrong foot. That solved that dilemma :P

that's what I was wondering - clipped in on the rough stuff, does that help you keep your feet stable on the pedals (as opposed to bouncing around a bit) - or are your 5.10s so grippy that your feet don't bounce around when you ride flats?

clipped in means your feet dont bounce at all. Also means you can use your feet to help maneuver the bike around when it starts getting rough. But, the same thing can be done with 5.10s and flat pedals. Just have to shift body weight a bit. So what i'm saying is, it really is personal preference. Clipped's only major advantage is for pedalling efficiency.

So now that you can test ride the whole setup, give it a whirl, let us know. but seriously Wes, you need more than one day on the setup: i'd say at least two weeks of solid riding, so you can have enough time to ride all your fave trails and have a complete picture of your riding with and without clips.

get 510 cyclones, i have a pair of hellcats(minnaars), theyre great but i think that the cyclones will be better cause of the extra support

I see that 5ten make clipless like the Minn, but a) I see they have no adjustability like my shims, B) do they work for all types, like my time?

errm, the Mr Minns have adjustability using shims. It's only way i got my Minns to work with the Crankbrother Mallets.

there are actually 2 sets of holes, one more forward than the other. The cleats themselves of course, have play in them for adjusting the position of the foot (toe in, and distance to the crank).

But the shims go underneath the cleats as per normal. It's the only thing preventing someone cutting up a brand new set of Mr Minn's just to be able to clip in when using CB Mallet's.

Ihad an inordinate amount of trouble with the left shoe in particular. So when I bought a spare set of cleats, I used the shims from that pack to add to the shims i already had installed. It raised the cleat sufficiently proud of the sole of the shoe to get it to clip in without a major mission. But the cleat now hits the floor

I think hubber Downhillingking also has that problem.
