I am seriously enjoying my Giant Escape 2 that I bought specifically for the commute.

I have been able to see much difference between the giant (for under R4k new) and a cyclocross bike (hard to source and expensive).

Main similarities:

fixed frame

wider tolerances for tyres (I believe from a 28mm to a 42mm wheel)

Great at going on paths or off the road I have found

Differences :

much lower spec and mtb groupo

For what I needed it is awesome! The new 2013 Scott Metrix range should also be landing in a short while. Distributors are bringing in the 30 and 40 I believe and is that same type of steed as the Giant Escape.

Problem with a road bike is you forever have to pay close attention to where you are cycling with those skinny tyres. Maybe CT is a bit better that Jhb, but here just about every man hole cover has been nicked and roads are not being maintained.

opens up other options such as pavements, track through the veld etc.

MTB for sure. I use the same MTB that I ride trails with. Clocked about 5000KM in a year and its still going strong. Knobby tyres means you are less likely to get a puncture.

MTB - as some previous posts say, never know when you need to mount the pavement to take evasive action cos of some taxi, tjop motorist or group of roadies riding 8 abreast.
