Early morning rides in Cape Town

Hello everyone,

 

So sadly winter is upon us and it is increasingly difficult to drag one's rear out of a warm bed to train ... so I am looking for any volunteers willing to commit to some early morning rides in Cape Town. I live in Obz but can cycle to meet anyone between Claremont/ Kenilworth are to Town side ... looking to cycle about 2 hours starting at 5am (around 50kays depending on the route) - any day will be fine (although multiple will be preferable).

 

If anyone is keen please post me a message and we can arrange details.

I'm keen for Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Stay in Tokia. On days when I need the car I drive through to Claremont VA with the bike to cycle from there. Otherwise I commute with some extra training to the office in Mowbray. Can do something regular from next week when I get past some large projects at work. .

 

There is a good size group who ride from Claremont every Tues and Thurs starting in Spring and riding through summer to the Argus who do a 2 hour loop on those days. 2 of the chaps in this group come through from Woodstock.

I'm keen to join aswell! From Rondebosch area.....but Shirt!!, thats early. So its basically a night ride that takes place in the morng (lol).

@KatyS, what sort of "tempo" u looking at ?

I'm very keen. I also live in Obz and need some social guilt to get my lazy ass out of bed. My normal time is 5:00 to 5:30, also a 2 hour ride.

 

My normal route is past Kirstenbosch, across Constantia Neck to Houtbay and back via Suikerbossie, Beach Road and the city. (48km, normally takes me 1:45 to 2:00, depending on the wind/traffic/night before).

 

Tuesdays and Thursdays are my swimming days, but I'm good for Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings.

 

You interested to do a ride this week coming up? I live in Merrick Street (just above Wesley).

I ride 5:30 am from Kirstenhof to Town along the main road (for the street lights) then through the W/front and out towards Camps Bay. Its difficlut to ride past Bakoven as no lights. Sun up is appx. 7:45 ish.

Its dark. Its cold. Coldest so far was 8 deg C. And the taxis and busses from Moybray onwards are a real rush!

 

My kit: Shoes and neoroprene overshoes. Knee warmers. Bib shorts. Thermo vest. Top. Arm warmers. Gillet, Short finger gloves and long finger glovers over that. Ear warmers which I take off when I get to town. Helmet. News paper under my top for the first ten kays. Three lights. Oakly Jawbones with a yellow lens set.

I'm keen for a couple of morning rides. Am doing the Knysna roadie in July and have slacked off heaps recently. I'll PM some deets. I've been doing the easy loop of driving to camps, 'dudno, chappies and back as traffic into town is light both ways and not much on the (wide) roads when riding either.

 

Easy anywhere tho.

Its nice to be warm. Any motivation to get outta bed at 5am helps. The rides are about two hours long so the sun is not a warming factor. The shoe covers are great for keeping my feet warm and my shoes clean in it rains.

And the reason for two prs gloves is so I can take the long finger gloves off if I get too hot.

But hey this is just me... I see other riders in shorts and a top with arm warmers. Nothing else. Hardcore!

 

Have my eyes on a sweeeeeeeet Castelli winter jersey at Olympic cycles.
