For you 'Spruit' riders - interesting?

Recommended Posts

Where is "the fence at the entrance on William Nicol" exactly? It is that drop-of sharp turn when you cross the road?

I rode through there on my way home yesterday - it is still a bit of a balls-up. The trail now goes right along the river and up the side of the bridge. It is certainly not been cleaned up. There is also a lot of 'grey water' Dead from a sewage pipe along this section.

I won't be back there, the whole route needs some TLC..

I posted some alternatives in another thread:

Another way of getting over the Republic / William Nicol

intersection is to ride up the hill to Mattie Ave. Easier to cross over

there but difficult to ride along the edge of WN at the bridge so I

usually go straight over into Parkmore and then turn left and ride down

into The Field and Study Centre.

OR

cross Republic at the lights before you hit WN and cross over

immediately after going left around the corner. This requires some road

riding skillz tho. Keep going towards Peter Place. If you turn in

through the gap in the concrete fence along here' date=' there are 1 or two

very nice paths down to the river with the (nowalmost broken) see-saw

bridges.

There is another route to get to Mattie and avoid

Republic altogether. It's quite a detour but is something different on

the same old, same old Spruit. Does include some tar unfortunately:

Riding down the Spruit from Jan Smuts.

About 1km down the trail you get those two steepish short downhills.

At the top of the second one turn right and this will take you onto a concrete bridge that takes you across the river.

Follow the trail down river for 1km or so and you will see a gap in the pallisade.

Go through it and follow the trail to the left.

Cross over a couple of very quiet residential roads still following trail.

You

will see another pallisade fence with a gate on your left - don't go

through it - but follow the road (Carlisle Rd) up to the stop street.

Alternatively you can turn left onto Stafford Crescent as both roads

take you to St Andrews.

Turn left onto St. Andrews and ride to William Nicol/Sandton Drive intersection (Rosebank Union Church on your right).

Turn left and ride on the pavement and cross over at Mattie Ave.

Are you part of the numorous maintenance crews/clubs that offer up their weekends to clean and maintain the spruit?

If you are then thank you. If not, then there is nothing to complain about.

I rode the spruit recently and thought that it is looking great, apart from the construction site.

Thanks to all the people who have contributed to making the ride more interesting. Perhaps we could start some informal hall of fame on the hub for these generous souls?

Para, Yes.

The clubs who maintain the Spruit and who build the bridges, skinnys, etc are Swampdogs, Club 100 and JMBC.

Are you talking about some of the "North Shore" bits and jumps they've added going through Bryanston?

I'm a member of JMBC and ride with Swampdogs. Talking to dog himself, he reckons that they're going to build a skinny over the pipe near the broken see-saw bridges even though it's not their area to maintain. Also has plans for a number of other bridges up past Emmerentia and Albertsfarm to make the route more varied ie. you can cross and ride on the other side at a few places.

great place to ride' date=' from what i have heard. when's someone going to organise a hub ride there?

[/quote']

Great idea! If it's a group of less than 10 we can go from my place in Bryanston and have a braai afterwards. If it's more than that we'll need a Plan B, since my place is too small to accommodate for that many people.

I think there's a bit of racing to be done this weekend, maybe we shouldtry to arrange something for next weekend?

Why not meet at the M&B. Easier to find for the people from Pretoria. BTW, I won't be able to make it the next 2 weekends.

Maybe we can arrange something towards the end of the month.

I'll post a new topic in a bit.
