Hi,

I want to order some pannier racks from CRC but all the threads on import duties confuse me and the whole process just freaks me out.

Can some one explain how the process works?

Dead simple! too easy in fact.

Parts don't attract much duties but what out for shoes and clobber. Order that separately from parts. Still worth it though. You will pay VAT on the local equivalent of the value on the Invoice.

Don't worry about it.

You pay vat only on components (no duties, generally)

You pay duties in varying increments/percentages on complete bike and apparel

Don't forget to calculate in your shipping costs when you compare prices with local suppliers like CWC and Buycycle. Sometimes it works out cheaper with these as opposed to international suppliers.

Compare carefully, and choose shipping method carefully - you can wait a long time for Royal Mail delivery via SAPO.

Easy, really.

For electronics, components, parts, etc you just pay VAT and admin/clearing costs.

Take the Item Price x Exchange Rate x 1.165 as a basic average cost estimator.

If you are going to buy shoes or clothes, it goes to x 1.54 as you pay 45%+ and still vat and duties ontop.

* Just a little tip, not many people know this, but if your order exceeds a value of R20k it will be stopped and you will need an importers code.

Strictly speaking, if your orders in one year combined amount to R20,000 you will also need a code.

Remember to do proper research on the items you buy. You cannot exchange them easily.

I would say that the biggest complexity is not having enough munny to spend.
