Yeah, I've seen the LR version online and it does look far better for running. The concern again (obviously) is that you'll probably battle to get one that is ideal for both MTBing and running so I'll need to make compromises. MTBing will probably get preference as I do that more often.

It did make me laugh when someone online was reviewing the LR version and stated that it stood for "long range"! :D

I'm not actually sure what the topic is anymore in the context of the thread's title, but I'm surely the most uncool MTB'er out there!!

I have a top tube bag for easy and regular access to some or other form of carbs, I carry one bottle of 32GI in a bottle cage, and another bottle of 32GI for rides longer than 2 hours in the sleeve of my Polar Pack (note: not Camelbak) which is filled with water (2 liter bladder). Then, in the pouch of the same Polar Pack, I carry my glucometer and insulin pen, with some more carbs in case of a hypo. Usually my car keys go there too if I'm not riding from home. And then, to round it all off, I have a saddle bag with enough spares in there for me and all the backmarkers, including a multitool with chainbreaker, two chain links, spare tube (although my bike is tubeless), 3 CO2 bombs and 2 derailleur hangers. Because of all of this weight which costs about R500 in total, and the 3 kg's of liquid and my extra 10 kg's of reserve fuel (a.k.a. fat which is priceless), I justify why I must have XO rear, XT front, XT brakes, XT rims, SID Team fork and RP23 shock to save about 500 grams at a price of several more Rands than my saddle bag and top tube bag cost. All very confusing, totally irrational economic behaviour - but hey, it works for me!!

I think you have all bases covered there, flymango! :) I might just have to follow your example and buy it all, it will also mean not having to make a decision. Or I could just ensure I always ride with someone like you and I can just bum off them :D

To be sure, these were all conscious decisions made through trial and error - they just aren't very rational economic decisions. But life would be boring for me if every economic decision I made was a rational one. What purpose is there to life if I can't indulge in one of my vices from time to time (not that cycling is a vice but you know what I mean). Maybe catch you at the back of the field someday ...

I think you have been given some good advice.

I have decided the best is to get to an antique shop and pick-up and old leather bag, then get a bottle for hydration, there is some bottle thread floating around.

Hope that helps.

Ooh, I like! That'll go brilliantly with my latest helmet (got rid of the Rudy Project as someone said it was not cool)

So, it seems I do listen to the advice given even if my comments may indicate other wise to some... I placed an order last night for a Camelbak Charge LR. I'll be sure to report back my views once it arrives.

Thanks for the advice :)

PS I might still get that saddle bag for the leisurely beach front rides though

Good decision, us fun riders need a safe way to drink on the rocky bits.

And yes I also leave the saddle bag permanently on the bike for when I leave the camel at home for 50 minute rides.
