How many of you ride train on the Braamfontien spruit? I know its not the ideal place for a single speed but its just convient for me. I uselly go there via Northcliff hill then trough all the parks.

When and were do you ride?

Uselly ride Saturday and Sunday mornings.

What ratio's do you or would you run?

I use 36t 19t would prefer 36t 18t but northcliff hill would not be possible.

Pet hate or or what do you like?

Traffic from the oppeside direction is a pain,

Passing the geared bikes (Dirt roadies) like they are standing still  love it.

Were else do you ride?

Please the spelling nazi's be kind.

Sjoe. With that gear you must be real hard core and FAST.

Are you riding the downhills and pushing on the ups?

How is your SS riding going?

32t 19t = 36t 21t will be to light for the spruit I would prefer 32t 16t = 36t 18t but then there would be some places on Northcliff hill I would have to walk. At the moment I ride everything.

32:16 is the perfect Spruit ratio (Northcliff is definitely possible, not easy though). That would equate to a 36:18. I almost never take gears onto the Spruit.

I ride 34:16 on a 26 ss on the spruit and Northcliff and surrounds weekdays over lunchtimes - might be able to turn a 34:15 up past worldsview, but not much more than that and still be able to ride off road comfortably without walking.

As I rode the spruit yesterday morning (on my super plush 160mm AM bike with plenty of gears), I saw quite a few les fortunate SS riders, most of which had rigid forks. This really made me take a close look at myself. And I have decided that I need to be more giving. So from now on I will ride the spruit with a bunch of R2 coins to hand out to you less fortunate SS rigid riders so that someday you too may enjoy the wonders of gears and suspension (oh, and shorts that fit)

My SS had me for breakfast ... spat me out ...and left me for dead on the couch

Pick another gear, spin easy on the flats, gun it and wave at the others on the up-hills and grin on the downhills :)

I have a better idea, put those R2 coins in a jar, and once you have enough get yourself a proper bicycle. Full on singlespeed rigid!

Iv been riding a 32/14 round jhb for most rides I just changed to a 16 for riding northcliff I find its a nice all round gear.

32/18 I find my self spinning out on most sections I have to say I enjoy passing the 160mm on the down hill and up hills with my 2k peace 9r with road bars

what? I didn't know you could buy single speed rigids... on purpose? ...I thought they kinda just 'happened' when you build a bike outta leftovers?!

;)

ok, so I have to admit in small letters that I was in Mike's on saturday coveting that beutiful blue Cotic BFe frame he has in there. And although I would not build it up as a rigid, nor a SS... I can understand the attraction to simple steel frames which you purists have

There - fixed it.

Singlespeeds "happen" when you have learned to ride, and have enough bikes to build one from leftover bits - please put said R2 coins in the right hand pocket, and I will grab some when I go past - make sure there are enough for at least 2 beers please - the girl with the singlespeed bike behind me also wants one. :)
