I actually bought an ION camera at the Knysna festival.Whilst I have not got to use it yet there are a numbers of features I like, that is,you can turn the camera in almost any direction you like,to start filming or to take a photo you only push one button (same with GoPro, hell, it only has 2 buttons, haha!),it is totally waterproof so you don't need to still buy the "cover" as with the GoPro, etc. It's only waterproof to 10m. GoPro is 60m. Not needed for MTB, but for those that dive it helps. Also the case on the GoPro is part of the package... and I quite like the fect that you can buy a replacement case (R400) if you bail hard and it gets damaged. Cheaper than replacing the whole camera.

There are a number of upgrades coming which include WiFi for simple downloading of the footage onto your pc. I was pretty bummed when they released the wifi-back for the GoPro 2. It allows remote control... as well as live streaming to a smart phone! (My poor little GoPro 1 can only take advantage of the remote control. It's the streaming that would be awesome for me.

I think the official launch at Sportsman Warehouse,Cape Union Mart etc will be within a month.

The proof will be in the pudding but for now I'm satisfied.

The red is just a comparison to the GoPro, but the ION looks pretty good. What sort of price range is it?

I have a Tachyon XC HD. Virtually indestructable, can take video or time lapse photo (1 every 2 seconds) and is water proof to 30m. Only down side is it doesn't have viewing a screen and I'm not sure how many places in SA stock them - I got mine from the USA. Footage is great as are the photos. Mine has been through 2 Sani's and contless days in the pool / sea with kids etc....Check out their website: http://www.tachyoninc.com/index.html they sell for approx US$100.

I noticed at the Knysna MTB event that there is another make called Ion, they looked good but did not have the time to ask any further information about them.

I also saw them at Knysna .They are very similarly priced to hero 2 . I am also in the market for an action camera , and a few of the features of the Ion that I found to be better ( in my opinion ) than the GoPro for MTB where : Smaller , lighter and stealthier ; I like the fact that to record you slide a button forward , 'cause when the camera is on your helmet you are never sure when it's recording ( so easy to feel whether slide is forward or back ) . I also like that you can just flick the camera around to record behind you , and the software automatically adjusts the picture to be right way up .

That said , I know the GoPro has excellent video capabilities , and have not seen Ion's videos yet , so .... decisions , decisions .

The GoPro has 1 beep to tell you it's recording, and 3 beeps to tell you when it has stopped.

The swivel on the ION sounds cool though.

Yes , but a lot of GoPro owners complain that in a race / ride with wind they are never sure whether they are recording , because they don't hear the beeps . Especially when the camera is inclosed in it's waterproof casing .

but there is a red led flashing, if it isn't you are not recording, I have actually disabled the sound on the GoPRo

Yes , but if the camera is on your helmet ........

hahahaha! that's why we see so many helmet cam vids where the rider has his helmet off and looks into the camera to make sure it's on, then puts his helmet on

You can check out the new CamOne Infinity, www.camone.co.za

It is a really good alternative in the POV camera industry and have had some really good review in Europe so far especially in the cycling industry. They are a German product and have just launched the product globally this year.
