I have witnessed first hand problems with valves in road tyres

All witnesses experience things first-hand. However' date=' your statement is not very useful. Tell us what the problems were and what you think caused them.

Hey Johan, that sounds like bicyle maintanence 101LOL

LOL ha ha point taken.

The tubes I were given to try out came with the slime in already. They worked like a charm, I never had to replace the tubes until the valves eventually got stuck and I couldn't release air or inflate the tube. Oh yes, and they cause one hell of a mess. I also found them to be ridiculously heavy too. Hey I suppose it all depends on what you are going for!

Not for me though

I'd say the pressure inside a road tube would be too much for something like this to really work. You want pressure to clog the hole with sealant, but not to push it all out.

Will have to give the road sludge a go...

Ahhh yes! The early days of sealant where someone would pucture in a bunch at 50km/h and everyone would get covered with green slime squirting out in all directions at 9Bar.

I've also had hassles with the slime blocking the valve but i must say I've never purposely cut a working tube before - novel idea...

You only need to make a small hole. I make a small hole in the tube using a needle, then I use a syringe [without a needle] and force the hole open wide enough for the plastic tip of the syringe to fit through. Then simply inject the slime. Afterwards you patch the hole.

I've tried using a syringe with a needle, and then allowing the slime to seal the hole. It works, but the slime tends to start to thicken when you squirt it through a small needle Embarrassed

Use one of those huge syringes that they use to baste meat and then you do not need to make a hole, the needle will make one and then just patch to be sure.

TWo things to note:

On the road the chances of getting a puncture is far less than offroad on a mtb.  Therefore, the extra rolling weight of sludge in the tube on a MTB is outweighed by the convinence of not having to stop every 10km to change the tube.

However, on a road bike which has been made as light as humanly possible for reasons of speed, it makes very little sense to now willfully add extra weight where it counts the most, on the off cahnce of not getting a puncture every 300km.  It is tradeoff that is not very efficient.  Rather take the risk of DNF on one out of 20 races, than having to lug unneccesary weight around and lose 5 places on every race.

BUT, if you are training mega km's every week over glass shrewn roads, and need a bit more resistance (weight) on the bike, then sludge in the tubes is a very effective and multi purpose training aid.  Just remember to change wheels when you race.

Hey all. What's the policy on putting green slime or sludge in road tyres? Does it stop punctures? Seems to work on MTBs? Any reason I shouldn't do it?

I use the el cheapo Raleigh stuff you get at Game and Makro. Works brilliantly.

You are just perpetuating the old rotating mass myth once more. We dealth with this issue extensively and, dare I say, violently, some months ago. Mass is mass on a bicycle, whether it rotates or does a handstand on the handlebars.

However, I am interested in what Regulation 311 is.
