Open your eyes and and admit that the best person must be selected to represent South Africa in the different disciplines. STOP the bull***t of forcing the sporting bodies to put someone from the "previous" disadvantage community into a team.

Lets just look at swimming. 2 gold medals for SA by the best persons in their category. Here you cant bull***t If you are not good enough you might drown.

Lets get your opinion..

To not be selected on merit is an insult to the person being selected.

Encourage and spend money on facilities at grassroots levels (build it, and they will come) and the natural talent & interest will rise to the top!

Unfortunately, the whole country (not just the ruling party) seems to have gotten stuck in a quick fix mentality :(

Lets loom at our sporting bodies like Swimming and Golf. Here you cant bullshitt. The best person will win if he or she qualify,Lets look at the olimpics so far.

Mens hockey - We are one of the 1st countries that is already starting to train for 2016 - Poor performance at the 2012 Olympics

Ladies Hockey - We are one of the 1 st countries that is already starting to train for 2016 - Poor performance at the 2012 Olympics.

And then we see Sam Ramsamy , smiling for what? He kept most of our sportsman and ladies in the cold for many years . Now he is on the gravy train .

Yes most of them. But we would have more athletes competing if the best person gets selected every time that a team gets selected during the year. I have met many athletes and parents that said that they had enough because they don't have a hope to get into the national team because of our selection criteria.

i think we have pretty much progressed away from that now - most teams are entirely selected on merit...rugby, cricket, soccer, hockey, olympics (except for cherise). I really cant think of any sportsmen or women that is in a national team that should not be?

I can agree with you on this, I see merit all over this olympics.

Did it not take a CAS hearing for an equestrian participant to be selected?

the contention being that the person representing us now (Partenell) is based in England and has been for the past 11 yrs and competes entirely there. This is vs Hart who competes in SA. So yes a minor dispute but the supposed better athlete went though and it wasnt related to AA (not that is in discussion here...or is it?)

Did not see AA being mentioned, just merit. :)

Olympics is 100% . But I believed that if it is done like this all season then we will have more top class athletes in world sport. Lets take cycling.

A team National team get selected to compete in a tour in Europe. Immediately they say - 5 riders , 2 from previous disadvantage. Good luck to the team but cycling rules states that if a rider finish more that 25 or 30% of the winning time then he or she will get eliminated.

The poor cyclist does not finish in the cutoff time and now get send home. Not only is that bad for him - he did not select himself - but for the team because they are now 1 or 2 riders less.

Lets take Hockey, Netball, Soccer ect ect. We are a proud nation and I believe that we can become a force in sport again. Take our National Rugby and Cricket team. Each and every person in that team deserve to be in the team. But can we say the same of most of the other sporting codes?

just looking back to the OP "forcing the sporting bodies to put someone from the "previous" disadvantage community into a team" it seems it is considered to be an issue for the OP

A better ranked athlete got this one, another case of merit.

Sport facilities needs to be developed at ground level to catch the potential at a young age. Secondly we need to get politics out of sport, and development take place from school level to pro status. Team selection is always going to be a issue even if you have done your bit and proven to be the best for the job - Cherise sadly this time.

This is a very sore subject for me , I have been on the receiving end of Sam and is sidekicks . I was chosen with Bernd Finke and put on the noxa ( not sure if this even happens anymore ) excellence program in 1998/99 to represent this country for XCO at the 2000 Olympics not even halfway into it we get told sorry but you the wrong colour !!!

He single headedly destroyed my passion for my sport !

When it comes to team selection I agree with Chris , it needs to be on your ability/performance/team work at the time . I don't care what colour people are as long as they can do the job correctly, they need to be chosen on this bases.

We at this year's games have had some great athletes go through but I still question how the criteria operates .

Sadly Chris I don't see it changing or being any different in the years to come , you always going to get those who REALY deserve to be at the games left out , its way to political and it this that destroys talent .
