I see that entries have opened on www.triathlonsa.co.za and the price for the sprint distance is R300.

We all complain about how the price is too high and so on, but the last series seemed to be pretty decent. Has anyone entered yet? Anyone else planning on doing it?

wont be doing this series till it moves away from Germiston lake

Many people were concerned last year, but they tested the water before the race and it came out clear. I'm sure (and hope) they will do the same this year

the Germiston lake is a very interesting setup with its inlet and outlet configurations so depending on where the tests are done you will get VERY different readings, and i am not convinced that the race will be called off in the event that the algae and e coli values are not within the parameters. i just think that there are way better venues than Germiston lake, then i am not even speaking about the others safety issues there are at this venue. IMO its sad because its a good event but the logistics suck

@ Face Plant

I don't know anything about the quality of the water at Germiston lake but the JHB Series is normally held by the Yacht club & the BSG Event is held inside the park.

For the JHB Series there's been full road closure.

the JHB series has moved to the other side... which is a good thing but..... the transition area is still too small and you should have road closure in the venue too, last year the cyclist where coming in on the same road as the cars where leaving the venue, each to their own i guess.... i personally will not support this series but hey there are alot more triathletes that do support it, i would rather save some money and go do the midlands events and the BSG events locally.

ps. just for a minute think why BSG moved their event from Germiston

I was man down for like a week.. The sickest I've been in ages, after training in Germiston.. And the cause of my sickness was e-coli...

I raced there 2 weeks later in a different part of the lake and I was fine... But yeah.. There are some dodgey inlets....

@Face Plant - Out of interest, which races are the ones that you are most keen to do?

@Cyclewizz - Sadly I'm not at the level to do an olympic distance yet, but it is on the cards. Struggling with the swimming bit but there is hope so maybe I will get to do one this season

ive done 2 of these events and i think they have been organised quite well.

Havent got sick yet and dont know anyone who has and road closure is pretty good.

I agree with Faceplant. That lake is dirty. It seems however that it makes a massive difference in which area and depth the sample for the testing is taken.

I have done about 4 races there in the last 24 months and it is sif. You can see it and smell it. Look closely before the event and I guarantee you, you will find condomns, empty bottles, dead fish etc along the shore. Again just smell it. It makes you want to puke!!

And in any case for the Olympic distance.... that high entry fee does not justify the effectively 5km road closure cause thats all it is. Oh and its not full road closure, only partial. You share one lane back and forth.

If you want clean water, go do the tri's at Buffelspoort. Now that is awesome!
