Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk addressed the crowd, congratulating the team behind the rejuvenation of the cableway, as well as the Harties community for its success in the domestic tourism sector.

Meteorologist Simon Gear opened the ceremony with a story about the geological happenings that led to the formation of the Magaliesberg mountains and ridges 300-million years ago.

The Mayor of Madibeng, Poppy Magongwa, then addressed the crowd, and spoke about the area's rich potential, saying that the relaunch of the cableway “couldn't have come at a better time”. She mentioned the importance of tourism in the area in fighting the challenges of poverty and unemployment.

Craig Saunders, director of the Harties Cableway, then took to the podium, telling his audience that he was exhilarated by the potential the cableway holds. He extended thanks to members of the community for all their support, saying that the cableway “belongs to us all”.

Craig also acknowledged that as much as the cableway is aimed at international tourists, it is also a call to South Africans to re-experience their own country. He expressed the hope that the cableway would serve as a window to the area, which he believes is “an incomparable pocket of South African heritage.”

The CEO of the Tourism Enterprise Partnership, Dr Salifou Siddo, also delivered a speech, explaining the business mechanics behind the project.

Finally, the crowd was treated to an inspiring speech by the minister of tourism, who shared insights on tourism and expressed his warm well-wishes for the Harties Cableway team.

“Anyone who has been to Switzerland will tell you that the Harties Cableway is up there with the best,” he said. “This is a world-class facility and we need many more products like this.”

The minister also spoke about the area's potential and growth over the years. “Hartbeespoort is one of the engine rooms of domestic tourism in this country,” he explained, saying that the strength of the Harties tourism sector was thanks to ordinary people – families – who took risks and invested in the area.

“That's what this country is all about – understanding what partnership is all about, and what responsibility is all about.”

After personally acknowledging the hard work put in by the Saunders family, the minister also acknowledged the importance of such a project in “providing a living for many people”.

After Craig officially declared the cableway open, to cheers and applause, a siren call was sent out from the top station in celebration.

After the speeches, guests sipped on champagne and tucked into a delicious buffet, admiring the views, enjoying the vibey atmosphere and posing for photos – a marvellous occasion to mark the end of a long project and the start of an exciting journey!

She ought to try fixing the crappy, potholed roads in her area, that would be a start!

For such a 'tourism' driven area its in a poor state indeed!

Was up there a few weeks back. It is really well done and must have cost a tidy sum to do the overhaul. The view from up top is great and facilities are good. They would do well to put a few walking trails in at the top so a person can explore the ridge a bit, the deck bar is good, we did not get to try the pizza, but the beer was cold enough.

We were also up there early and by the time we came down at midday the queue was into the carpark

Nice one
