In your own experience, what's the best commuting tire for a 700 wheel size?

The Gators I'm riding now is taking a beating and need something more rugged...

I cut the side walls of an old tire and place one tire into another tire...

doing it since 2002

folding tire with a soft sidewall works the best for the inside one

rolling resistance is high, so when you riding your race wheels again, you flying.

so many people question this method and say it is impossible.

believe me - it works like a bomp

Used to swear by Gators despite the weight and difficulty of getting on/off to fix punctures. I went to GP4000s though for lightness - they're damned pricey, but they've proved as tough as the Gators so far, much lighter and easier to get on/off. It's not rated as a commute tyre I know, but it has proven durable on all sorts of bad roads.

I also have a set of GP 4 Seasons which are rated much more for all year / commute type use - also pricey, and I had to order from UK. I'm not convinced they'll be that much tougher than the 4000s, even though they look chunkier. They do go up to 28mm tho if your frame can take, which makes for a more comfy ride.

I'm looking at the City Rider at CWC, the have a 700x47C, looks like they will do the job just don't know if that will fit my bike... I have a Raleigh RC3000

Don't know the RC3000 geometry but most compact road/race frames will take a 25mm - some you can squeeze a 28mm on, albeit if they have short pull brake calipers even with a 25mm you may need to put the wheel on with tyre uninflated. Anything bigger very doubtful.

Maxis detonater,

They detonate every couple rides but are dam cheap.

I go for the cheapest tire possible.

yeah, the maxi's are good or kendas or serfas. my trick is to use tyre liners which, in my experience, seems to make them last a bit longer.

um, you'll probably need a mtb to run that...

The guy at CWC says it should fit, never had issues other wise buying from them as I'm in Pretoria.

My frame is a 54cm Compact Comfort(CC) if any one has the geometry savy on that...

Wow - I'd be very surprised if a 47 would fit, I'm no expert but I doubt you'd get anything much over a 28 .... I'd definitely get that in writing and a promise of a free exchange with free shipping

You should also check your rim can actually mount something as big as a 47 - i know my everyday 700c road rim (Mavic) states nothing more than a 28mm, although I know some people have gone above this to 32mm and a bit more. I'd doubt anything 40+ would work tho

Turns out my rims can only go up to a 28C...

Cool - that's pretty normal. If you normally ride 23 or 25, and you're happy with a bit more weight on the tyre you'll find they make for a very comfy ride when outright speed doesn't matter so much. Most road frames you can squeeze a 28 on, can be tight fit though
