Alivio has been around since I started racing 14 years ago. Back then it was the lowest shimano had to offer (save for the SIS stuff), and it still is pretty entry level. There are the cheaper groups nowadays, like the ones with the HUGE jockey wheels, but personally I wouldn't touch anything below Deore for a beginner. Alivio will wear out too quickly.

Used to be one up from Altus. Stills close to or at the bottom of the Shimano foodchain and hardly ever used as a complete group with cranks/brakes/etc being dropped in favour of cheap[er] Eastern offerings. Solid enough if you're not going to race on it. Should be ok for round-the-corner-to-the-shop-trips.

Due to budget constraints I bought a cheapish first MTB (Schwinn Mesa) 3 and a half years years ago. It has a nice mix of Shimano Altus and Alivio. For 3 years I rode that bike almost everyday and rode it pretty damn hard - ridden through a couple of very wet rainy seasons - even riding in the rain along the Spruit a number of times. Some hard up and downhills in Sabie and elsewhere. Even did a handful of short races on it. Bear in mind that I've weighed 95 - 105kgs during that time...

I did have to replace wheels when the hubs couldn't take anymore (put Deore on) and have only just now replaced front d?railleur - not because it was broken but because it got bashed in a crash. And replaced the chain twice. Rest of the components are 100%.

...and the best thing about it - still going strong. I keep it around as a spare and to loan to those wanting to try out our lovely sport. I can still get on that bike and be as quick as I am on my GT.

IMO - sometimes we can be quite snobbish about top of the range groupsets. Yes they work better and are lighter and stronger but for many starting out Alivio etc is more than adequate.

My old TREK 4300 has Alivio on, and have never given any hassel in 6 years of fairly hard riding. Have done Sabie Experience with them, no problem.

As far as I'm aware Shimano's hierarchy of MTB drivetrains goes something like this (top to bottom).....

XTR

Deore XT

Deore LX

Deore

Alivio

Altus

The last two might be in the incorrect order.

I've had no problem whatsoever with my Alivio. In fact it is known as the quietest drive train arround.

Wow, then I guess you've never heard an XTR drivetrain Smile.
