Will the swim not start in smaller waves next year, which would probably space the bike out more to have less drafting. It would be my first time and I dread the swim, would four months be enough time to develop a proper swim technique.Major reason for doing this is to become confident in the sea, it is a challenge just to get through the waves and overcoming the fear of the depth and currents etc.

I have done it. I don't necessarily have the best technique, but as I said earlier, try to do as much of your swim training in the sea if possible.

im doing epic and am ramping up my training from Oct....does anyone think its a good idea to do this as part of training. Obviously not a focus and never done it before but would be something nice to do to break up the riding a bit?

Will someone please post a estimate of costs to get to and enter 70.3?

It doesn't matter if you go there and enter, or if you enter at home, it will cost you R1725 either way :whistling:

Where do you live? Do you have a car? Do you have friends that are also doing the race?

I did both this year.

Swam a total of 1.5km and ran 7km leading up to the race. I have done a few IM's before though.

Found I was stupid strong on the bike and decent enough on the run.

Definitely worth doing both if you have the chance

Been there and felt that....

What exactly happens that you feel you have to walk the last 10k?

Personaly i found nutrition to be critical, especialy the timing when u eat, dont wait until its to late. Obvisiouly you also need to pace yourself, dont try and race at a harder pace than what you are trained for.

Mistakes I have made in the past were hydration, did not drink enough water during cycle leg so when I arrive at the first water table I make a pig of myself and I cannot run. Generally when I do run anything up to 15k's in a race I dont drink anything at all and perform my best under those conditions. On a 21k I need to take in some water but very little at a time. So I guess the secret here is take in water and food in consistently and in tiny portions during the bike leg so when I get to the run leg I am firing on all cylinders.

What are some of the seasoned Ironmen's opinions regarding fullrace suit versus two piece suit?

I am by no means a seasoned Ironman but a big no no of the fullrace suit is if you have to make a pit/ss stop next to the road.

Two piece. Then you can leave the shirt in T1 and not have to cycle the first bit with a freezing lycra chest plate.

Thanks, this makes a lot of sense. I'm sold.

Any brand suggestions? These things are freakin expensive!

Who has time? Piss in your suit, it's what the pros do.

I just bought the Zoot Performance Tri Suit from ChainReactionCycles (http://www.chainreac...x?ModelID=81508), but I got it for R500 on their last sale and I see it's over R1000 now.

Agreed, these things are stupidly expensive.
