flip a layback seatpost and bingo, a more forward position on the bike

Cool, I haven't got experience with that. I'm assuming you need to train with that seat post angle to get your muscles used to it? Do you find the bike twitchy?

You can get a set-forward seat post to emulate the seat post angle of a TT bike but from what I have read it will leave the bike twitchy with all the weight on the front wheel. TT bikes are designed to have a stable centre of gravity in that position.

 

Yip, that's what I do. I shortened my stem and moved my seat forward. My position is not completely over the bars, but for my purposes it's fine.

 

The bike is a bit more twitchy, but not unmanageable.

The 70.3 is currently the big race I am aiming for but I did the calculations and for me to goe and do the race (accompanied by my wife) it will be about 5K. So I dont know if it is worth it.

 

I have started the Triathletes training Bible and am in Base1 currently. So we will se how it goes as the longest event I have ever doen in Tri was the Xterra Buffelspoort this year.

 

Whould the athletes that have done some 70.3's say it is worth the 5K (travel, accomodation, race etc...)?

If you are going to put them on a road bike you need ones where you can adjust the position of the elbow / forearm supports backwards. If you want the pads positioned directly above the bar like a TT bike you need the seat tube angle of a TT bike to get yourself that far forward.

 

Looking at the Vision clip-ons posted above I cannot see that adjustment. The Profile Design T2+ for example allows you to make that adjustment.

I got clip-ons from Chain Reaction Cycles. I did a lot of reading and research, but my opinion is that in the end the main difference is in what you think looks pretty.

 

I got these: http://www.chainreac...x?ModelID=26976 (Profile Design Carbon Stryke Aero Road Bars), but in retrospect I could probably have gotten a cheaper set.

 

If I was buying right now I'd probably just get these: http://www.chainreac...x?ModelID=78776. They're on sale at the moment for less than R400, which I think is a pretty good deal.

 

Oh, editing to add this: if you want to be able to do a ITU triathlon, the type of tri- bars you're allowed to use is limited. Iron Man is not ITU, so the limitations don't apply.

Yes, they're quite adjustable. Multiple holes for the armrests to screw into. Though I must say that I normally just move them around on the handlebar rather than adjust the armrest position for left/right adjustments.

 

The extensions themselves can also be adjusted forwards/backwards and rotated. Took me a month or two before I settled on a position I'm happy with.

Hi, I am looking at doing my first 70.3 next year. One problem is I will only be able to get up to East London on the Saturday morning, with the race on Sunday.

 

Anyone done the race that would be able to advise if it is feasible to arrive on the Saturday?

You can definitely do the weekend that way. On Saturday you will need to:

 

- Register (takes a few minutes)

- Check your bike in (from about lunchtime onwards I think)

- Attend race briefing in the evening

 

You will just need to have the content of your transition bags planned beforehand as you won't have the Friday evening to pack them.

 

Enter and enjoy.

Very managable. There is even time to swim the course on Saturday morning. Regsiter first thing, go for a swim, browse the expo, eat lunch, check in bike, race briefing. You have access to all your stuff again on Sunday morning in case you forget something so no need to stress. The Friday night sleep is more important anyways
