Commuting Machine - Upgrade current setup or new bike?

So...

I am still considering the idea of getting my hands on a cyclocross bike or similar for commuting into work.

I had a new thought of upgrading the components on my current dually as follows to achieve a similar goal :

I have a 2010 Giant Trance X3, main issue is tyres, shock and fork

> Buy either a cheaper wheelset or a way better one than my current ones which are average off the hub a fit slicks with slime to reduce rolling resistance

> Upgrade the Fox Float R rear shock (no lockout) to something decent with lockout!

> Possibly upgrade the Fox 32 F120R to something with lockout but its quite a cool fork so I may just leave it.

Is this idea realistic? The bike as is is pretty light for a cheaper dual sus so it could work?

+1 Buy a cheapie to commute on.

A single speed hardtail would work nicely. There is an On-One Inbred for sale in the classifieds for R4000.

Dirt cheap 29er that will make a super commuter.

+1000 for the SS HT bike to commute with. Started last week and done it 4 times already. Just don't use a 32x18.... Man it's like a interval session all the way to work. Better gearing is currently in the post should arrive next week
