Ok I need some advice. Broke the 26er and now i can get a 29er.

Narrowed it down to 2.

Option 1

2013 Stumpjumper Comp

XT:FD,RD, SLX Shifters

Sram BB30 Crank

Magura MTs Brakes

Rockshock Reba.

Wheels is standard Roval.

New

+- R18300

Option 2

2012 Scott Scale Expert Carbon

Xt/Slx mix

Rockshock Reba

American Classics Wheels

Used for around 400km

R20000

So i know the one is alu an the other one carbon, no brainer, but budget is tight and one is new other used. R2000 more.. Don't know.

What do you think?

I'd go for the stumpie. Warrantee, cheaper and a better parts spec.

What he said or get the Scott insured for full replacement value.

ride both, feel the difference in these 2 geometries, as they are different.

Stumpy is relaxed while the Scott is more racy...like the Spez Epic...

He'd have to do that anyway... otherwise the claim will be averaged. It's why my crappy old GT dh bike is insured for R 25k. Its replacement is the GT Fury...

I'd go for the Scott depending on frame condition. Have it looked through.

Those are awesome frames - light weight and stiff. Parts can always be upgraded

Doesn't bicycles also work like cars where you get paid out the current market value, even if you are over-insured?

Nope. It's replacement value of the item, at the cost that you would have to pay to buy a new one. Same as a TV and so on. Only reason that cars are different is that there's generally finance attached to them, and very specific, set values for a given car. Book value, basically.

EDIT: Well, I suppose that one could say that you would get paid out current market value. But the market value in this instance would, as said above, be related to the replacement cost when buying a brand new item

Easier upgrading to XT shifters than to a Carbon frame I feel

to a point, yeah.

But the alu frame will be sold for, say, R 3,000. Price difference of R 2k between the 2 bikes means that the kitty now rests at R 5k. Upgrading shifters & derailleurs & brakes to XT (from SLX) will cost dearly. so say another R 1k, giving you a total budget for frame replacement of R 6k. You can get a very very nice On One Carbon frame for that...

Ok Got the final quote for the stumpy. But it is with slx shifters.

Im beginning to lean towards the scott for 2 reasons:

1) American CLassics wheels! Had them on my 26er and loved them.

2) For R1700 more i get a carbon bike..

And again I would go for the Scott above the On one, No Questions
