Full bike service done on MTB : brakes now not working

Recommended Posts

had a full service done on my mtb. I run the new limited edition hope tech evo brakes. Best brakes I have ever ridden. Today after the service I now have absolutely NO braking power

Why is this, what did the bike shop do wrong? The Hopes are expensive, did the bike shop go and break something which wasn't broken?

Have to take the bike back but need to know whether they will just spin me another soppy story

Pull the lever, no stopping power

it isn't a Hope problem...didn't give me any hassles until I got back from the shop

I know its not a Hope problem. It is a mechanic problem. Jason just happens to be the best when it comes to mechanic problems of any sort.

It also helps that he knows the Hopes intimately and if there is something that the previous mechanic stuffed up he can spot it, sort it, warranty it etc.

Dont even bother with the LBS again.

Only ever have Jason (4barlinkage) assist with your Hopes.

Are both brakes equally bad? Did the LBS change pads?

Chances are they managed to contaminate the pads when cleaning the bike or they could have pulled the levers with now wheels on the bike cause the pads to pop out... Don't ask my how but Ive seen stranger things.

Are both levers still firm when the pads engage or do they feel like marshmellows?

Sounds like air in the system and they need to be bled properly.

I don't even want to ask who worked on the bikes.

I can give you the name, but it might be unfair as I haven't spoken to them as yet about the bad service they have done on these bikes

Rather ask who check rode the bikes after the service and before the customer picked them up

Anudder example of why its important to check ride the bike yourself before paying / leaving the shop

Bietjie moeilik om jou fiets na service te test ride as jy werks klere en hakskoene aan het :-(

I'm opening a service shop only, come January. So let me give this a try. Chances are they washed the bike once the service was done with a degreasing lubricant that contained a mild fragrance and high foam. As fragrances generally contain fats, this would get on your rotors and discs causing it not to stop properly. Or they had a overspray when they lubed the chain and this went onto ur rotor. The mushy feeling in the brakes are actually you pulling so hard it is going past the point your used to before when it was working fine. Plain and simply as the dust gets it and the constant breaking will cause it to desolve and breaks will go back to normal. Just my 2 cents worth.
