Gotta love these one word answers. "Spark", "Epic".

How about engaging your brain and providing the OP with some insight into why you chose a particular brand?

Another Thing Dodger, I have started doing lap riding sort of XC style and the Pivot is great for it,

its an excellent climber and very supple down the tracks the rear shock has quite a long stroke and the interesting thing is that the rear shock is set quite low only about 130 psi compared to 210 psi on my anthem but just about no bob

Thats where the linkage is sorted, the Designer Dave Weagle I think... is a master linkage man and the DW link is patented to the Pivot but he works on many other brand linkages and if I'm not mistaken he helped Mr Morewood on the new Pyga ..

believe me when you fall on a carbon you will always get up and look for a crack ... no way with an Alu frame

Biggest load of hogwash ever! Carbon absorbs vibrations and it can absorb impact to a much higher degree than aluminium...

From personal experience:My brothers Giant Anthem X Frame cracked from just riding... less than a year old... My old Giant NRS air Carbon 2004 has taken a beating!!... and before the Langs Baviaans my son took a hacksaw blade to the top tube and played the violin...

However others could have had other experiences... but the science is proven!

Test riding is important.

My wife was heart set on a cannondale scalpel 2 and ended up buying the epic expert 29.

The main difference was that she felt more comfortable on the Epic Geometry.

Same price same weight.

When comparing the epic to the Scott, they are very similar.. The spark has better value at this price point and is certainly better spec'ed than the Epic.

You mentioned you want something with no pedal bob, in that regard the Epic is the best option on the market as the brain shock eliminates suspension action from pedaling inputs.

The value of the spark, would get me to buy it over the epic if this is as far as you can push your budget. However with an extra 6k or so; an Epic comp carbon with a new wheelset and crank is one mean bike! (If the same spec, I think the Epic is better platform)

Now when considering all options, not just Scott and Specialized exclusively. I agree with @wapad, the 429 is a brilliant bike, especially if your goal isn't to win races but to "participate' I think the 429 will prove to be more comfortable/usable and you won't really notice the weight difference.

*I would also say look at a tallboy, but they aren't the greatest in terms of value for money, even worse than spez

Agreeing with the other posts - ride them both to get a proper idea for which might be better for you (if your LBS won't let you test-ride the bikes that you are looking to shell out R40k for, find a different LBS).

I ride a Scott (Scale) most of the time and I love it, so I can't pretend not to be biased. Having not ridden either of the two bikes in question, I can't comment any further than what has already been said (looking at specs etc).

What I will say is you might find people being just a little more tolerant and accomodating if you ride the Scott (well, anything other than a Specialised, especially if it's S-Works). People will smile and be friendly and let you out of side-turnings on a Scott or a Giant or an Opus. This is not be taken as truth, however, and is merely adding another element for consideration :)

If you're still investigating the market, the Pyga Industries 29er dual-suss is supposed to be an absolute pearler (and proudly South African). If you spec it up, it's probably in that sort of price range. While you're at it, have you looked at the Cannondale options?

Anyway, just some more food for thought... :)
