Daar is nie so ding as "een keer koop en klaar koop" Ek het n Polar draf (RS800) en n fietse C 720i Polar, maar ek glo GPS is die toekoms.

ChrisH Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 I've had a Garmin Edge 305 for 2 years now (1st one sold in RSA) It has never missed a beat and does everything a Polar can do and more. I've never felt the need to have anything else on my bike, and I carry it in my hand when I run. It's only limitation is 11 hour battery life, but I have a portable charger that gets around that problem. Having said that I wear a Polar watch to the gym.

I have been using a Polar 725 for about 5years. No GPS, but I get everything I need and more . Cycling, Swimming and Running!!

Then you're gonna lov ethe forerunner 305. Same functionality as edge 305, except its wristwatch...

I have tested the Garmin and found it bulky and the software (compared to the standard Polar software) lacking. Some people used 3rd party software for the garmin though. The 305 doesn't allow for route tracking, etc. In the end it is your choice, I just prefer the Polar products.

The Garmin Edge records a track log and can also navigate routes (point to point routing; not auto routing). Easiest is to setup routes on the PC and then upload to the Edge. The Garmin Edge is "bulky", but that is because it has a large screen for easy reading on a bicycle.If you want a smaller model, the Garmin Forerunner 305 has the same functionality as the Edge, but with a smaller screen and comes in a wrist watch format.I don't use my Edge for running, so prefer the bigger screen on the bike. All depends on what your primary use and preferences are.
scotty Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I bought the Polar 520 but was not happy with its unusual HR, max speeds, nor reading etc and could not get it to "talk" with my pc so had to manually load the data. Got the Edge 305 extremely easy to use and which for the price of the 725 surpasses it with usual HR, Cad,set up training excerises, etc but also has GPS funtionality. Weighs next to nothing and when fitted to your stem, is quite inconspicuous.

I couldn't say go from Modderfontein, turn left on Piet Snot street and then right in Sannie Suicide, etc, etc and then have the thing "direct" me according to the route. As for tracking WHERE i've gone (Google Maps), that I do with my phone.

The Edge 305 is not a mapping type GPS and cannot auto route (but AFAIK neither can the polar ). Edge 305 can do straight line point to point routing.Create the route on your PC with compatible software e.g. MapSource and upload. At route points the Edge gives absolute direction prompts (e.g. N at point1, W at point2 etc.) You can even generate the route using an auto-routeable map on the PC, but you will still only get point-to-point routing on the Edge. Not as nice as left on Piet Snot street , but remember auto-routing costs $$.You need a mapping type GPS plus an auto-routable map set for your area. (Edge 306 & 307 are mapping type, but 306 does not have HR, cadence & barometer).
