Which components can I take off my 26er to build myself a 29er...

Hi all!

I need some help!

I have a 26er with a shimano xt 3x9 groupset.

I know minimal about building up bikes but I was given a nice 29er frame so am considering the change.

Can I move the whole groupset to the 29er frame?

Am I wrong to think I can get away with only buying a new shock and wheelset if i already have the frame?

You just made my day!

So there shouldnt be compatibility issues with the frame and groupset?

Will the brake disks and casette from my 26er just pop onto the 29er wheels?

All correct! Only new things you need are wheels, tires & fork!

You may have some compatibility issues with differences between post and IS mounting, depending on the particular frame and fork options. But there are adaptors available for just about any combination. If you buy new hubs, make sure they have the same fixing arrangement for the rotors (ie. centre lock or 6 hole) Also check the hose lengths on the brakes. May come up a bit short depending on the routing.

Other than that should be fine?

And a wider handlebar 680mm is lekker

Specially when you slap a couple of bar ends on that puppy.

Im guessing Chain needs to be extended as well?

Rough rule of thumb is for every 1.27cm difference in chainstay length = 2 links (2.54cm) of additional chain.

Could also need:

Seatpost: depending on required diameter of new frame

Front Der: depending on mount used on new frame

Headset: tapered vs straight sould be fixed with adapter. Could also be integrated vs semi-integrated vs external...

BB: Std or BB30, BB92, blah blah...

Brakes: IS vs PM, but could be fixed with adapters

Hubs: 12x142 rear vs QR and 15mm vs QR fork could mean adapters needed
