Tubes or No Tubes options for a 29"

Ok, first off, I'm not trying to combine the two most disputed arguments in one thread.

 

But in anticipation of my newly ordered 29” rig, the following question.

 

If I want to do a ghetto tubeless conversion on these rims, what size inner tubes do I use?

I know that 26” uses 20” BMX tubes. Would you suggest 24” or should 26” fit snug enough?

 

And then the alternative: going with tube and tyre liner. The bike comes with ZTR Arch rims and Schwalbe Racing Ralph Performance 29 X2.25 Tyres - So not UST and maybe not ideal for the tubeless thing

 

I read somewhere on MTBR.com that you can use a 26”tube on a 29” rim, once you get it stretched over and start to inflate it, it will expand enough. They talk about it as a “Type O Negative” tube that you can use on 26” and 29” rims and with the reducing / adapter ring you could even lend it out to fellow riders with schraeder valves.

 

26” is lighter, stores smaller plus it is still cheaper and easier to source than 29” Tubes.

Just buy the no tubes tubeless tape. No need for the strip! Tape up the spoke holes! Use the wide tape!

 

Pop in tubeless valves! Put the tire back on. Add sealant. Go to the garage and pump it up with a compressor. Shake rattle and roll the wheel. And bobs your uncle. Or so you hope.

Depending on the depth of the rims the strip might be required using just tape on deep rims cuases issues with some tyres seating on the bead. but yea gettho is so 1980 just do a proper conversion.

So you guys don't think I'll have major issues with the standard tyre's thinner sidewall on the tubeless? Not on the conversion side but as a reliability issue? I don't want to do the conversion and end up riding with tubes after two rides due to cuts in the tyre.

No most people convert till they have time/money to buy lighter proper UST rims, And youll only get cuts in the tyre if you use none tubless rubber with rice paper sidewalls, thats got nadda to do with the rims.

 

The other issue is foldable tyres (none UST) dont have a lock on bead, so they tend to creep of the rim under load, once again thats not due to the rim being UST or not its due to the actual bead design of the rubber.

Ja, see that's my problem the bike comes standard with non-UST tyres (I'm sure the rims will work fine), maybe I should just tough it out with the original setup until the time comes to buy new tyres and get a nice set of rubber to wrap around the rims.

ok yeah schwalbe's are super thin although (some people here claim they do ok on the foldable's and evo's) I wouldnt run them, only schwalbe i would run toobless is the snake skin versions.

Tried this, doesn't work, especially the stock schwalbe tyres, The sidewalls on schwalbe's are way too thin. You will see the stans bubbling through the tyre's sidewall.

 

Do it properly or you will just cause yourself frustration.

I run the schwalbe evo tubeless and have had no issues even when riding rocky tracks

Dont go full UST on 29" too heavy. For Arch rims just get tubeless ready tires with some sidewall protection. No extra tape required. Try to sell the tires you get still new.

snakeskins do ok. The rest of the Schwalbe clan dont. Geax have served me well but they dont go on Stans rims.
