With all this rain up here I decided that I have had enough of this nonsense.  I don't mind cycling in rain but cycling in traffic with no brakes is a problem for me.  So I was thinking that buying a entry-level mountain bike with disk brakes fitted would be the solution (correct me if I am wrong).

So went to the LBS to start my pricing and seeing what is available.  I was schocked to find out that it is pretty expensive to have disk brakes fitted to a bike.  So I am looking at buying something like the Schwinn mesh GSD for about R3750.

Just would like to hear your opinions.  I just want to ride a bike to work in rain.  I still prefer a road bike so would like to get away with things as cheap as possible.

the nice thing with the mtb in traffic is you can ride closer to the sidewalk, and lesser punctures. You ride through the dirt at robots and did not have to change the "line" you go. just go over or through it.

Rather take that R4k and buy a better 2nd hand mtb. more value for money , parts wize, and you just want it to commute, not race.popeye2008-01-23 05:39:18

Must agree with you pops, my first bike was such a Schwinn.  Mine came with sramx4, I replaced them twice, then switched to x9.  The shifting on the x4 is not smooth and it is also not that responsive, needles to say how hard you must press the levers to get it to shift.  I would rather spend the bucks on a second hand bike with better components.
