In order to protest against the cyclist who was killed last Wednesday by a Golden Arrow bus, PPA is organising a silent protest to take place tomorrow, one week after the incident.

The protest will take place on the pavement at the accident site at 174 Main Road, St James. Please join us there from 06h45-07h15. Parking is available at Muizenberg beach or the station. There is also a parking lot nearby.

If you have one of the PPA safe cycling '1.5m' jerseys, please wear that. Black arm bands will be supplied.

You are welcome to bring along friends and family members. Spread the word and let's get as many people there as possible - as we understand it, media will be there as well.

I took the liberty of videoing my journey homeward following the attendance of the protest today. This was 7am northbound.

It is actually disturbing, to think these cars literally just drove past all the protesters and signage, and then proceeded to overtake us in this manner - it's no wonder people are getting killed.

You can see how cars speed up , pass on blind rises, then slam on brakes once ahead. Miles over the white line... we were riding with todays SE wind and comfortably doing 38-40kmph, look at how we get overaken at speeds far exceeding the limit.

It's a deathtrap.

Very good video Zilla.

Here's an idea, use it don't use it. Get your club to draw up a petition requesting a speed zone change, speedbumps and traffic monitoring along the stretch of road from Fish Hoek to Muizenberg. That stretch of road should be zoned at 30km/hr. The residents will buy into it because they struggle to get out of their driveways in the mornings and evenings. The Petition should be handed over to PPA to take up with the city.

Speed bumps and CCTV cameras along that route will also help the authorities to identify those snot dronk motorists who travel at 140km/hr down that stretch of road after 9pm and before 6:00pm in the mornings (nearly got taken out in my car by one of these p***se on Saturday evening a week ago on the way home from a club gathering in Fish Hoek).

We have to get the non motorised public on our side, so practice your smile and wave.

trailered boats are another problem from Simon's Town to Millers Point but a road widdening can solve that issue

some are way too close, while riding you don't even know how close they are!

I don't mind a wide berth, but then they break the law, but allowing a lawbreaking overtake sometimes causes even more issues, speed up brake scenario.. and hitting someone else head on.

Would riding a bit further inwards help?

I tend to own my bit of road. When people want to overtake they have to come into the oncoming lane. People tend to be more careful I find.

Ride in the gutter and they squeez past you as the cars don't have to worry about the oncoming traffic.

I am traffic and cars must slow down for me.

If it's a wide road the cars don't have to go into the oncoming lane but should be able to see me.
