Can I use 3X10 FD on a 2X10 Crank?

I still don't really understand why you need separate 2x10 & 3X10 FD , can't you just adjust a 3x10 limit screws to the 2x10 range of movement , I'm assuming the cage must be virtually identical becuase everything else baring the swing range is?

It should work. The shifter is the part that has the pretensioning in for each calibrated shift, the derailer is the "Slave". Even a 9 speed rear derailer should work with ten speed shifters (you may just have to change the rollers to ten speed cogs)

Running 3x10 fd on a 3x9 drivetrain. It works but there is less tolerance in crosschaining and your limits are a lot more sensisitive so have to be set more accurately. Nothing to stress about.

The only difference is that the back plate on the 3 x 10 extends lower down so that it can pick up the chain from the small chainring.

So basically you can use 3x10 FD on 2x10 crank but not the other way round because the 2x10 Fd cant accomadate the smallest chainring?
