Hi guys and gals.

Me and the So are trying to figure out what bikes to get for ourselves and frankly the informations surrounding all the brands and specs of the bikes are a bit overwhelming. So Ive come here to ask for some advice. We are probably very casual riders and will most likely never compete (unless the aim is only to finish laugh.png ) but we are looking for something "decent" at a reasonable price. I know my SO will be happy with whatever I get but personally I want something that will at least last us a awhile.

So onto the meaty end of this post. Any recommendations..? Is it better to got for a lesser known better spec'd bike or the other way around? Also I see a lot of talk around the 26'er vs 29'er debate. Is it worth paying attention to if we are just casual bikers..?

Any input will be greatly appreciated happy.png

Tip - Don't buy a new bike!!! You will get much better value for money if you buy second hand but in good condition. Also, the bike you get for R5000 will be a lot better than the bike you get for R4000.

I write exams on Tuesday and Wednesday so am not on the net a lot at all but after then I'll do a proper search for you and find you bikes which will last.

I take back what I said above!

Buy a second hand bike though!

Look on the hub or gumtree for a GT avalanche 1.0 2.0 or 3.0

They are very strong bikes and cheap to maintain.

The 1.0 is the best followed bu the 2.0 and then the 3.0.

You can get them for between R2000 and R4500.

Look for one that hasnt been used much.

If you find something you like email the details to me and i'll give you my opinion.

Secondhand is better option for that money. If you must buy new in the 4-5k region look at Titan Sport Disc. Bought one for my son and has been pretty decent thus far. Checkout Obike on web. its Omnico's website for deals on New Old stock.

3 brands to look at.............Titan, Axis and Silverback. All offer quality bikes and good specs for your money. There has been a many posts of late regarding Silverback's after sales service. It seems they really go the extra mile. I would put them on the top of the list based on all the positve feedback mentioned here..

I disagree with the 2nd hand route. If you buy new, you will get a warranty, a proper sizing and a proper set up and there is nothing nicer than walking out of a shop with a new bike.

Also, you have to know what you are doing when buying second hand. You have to know what to look out for. Beginers very seldom have that knolwledge.

You say that you have no intention of competing...........wait till the bug bites?

My opinion: go 2nd hand.

For 4K you can buy something decent in the 2nd hand market, but for that price you'll be buying at the absolute bottom of the range when buying new.

Find a friend who knows something about bikes and take him/her with to check out a bike you're interested in.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I would love to go second hand but the issue here is of course that I would be clueless when it comes to what to look for in a good buy. I have some time so can wait for end of year clearance sales as well if it will be worth it....
