Last night at a company function both front and rear licence plates were taken off my car... I'm guessing the genius is banking on his traffic fines and e-toll account coming my way in future.

I reported it to the cops but I'm quite worried. What do I do now? Should I reregister my car with different plates?

Anyone else with experience of this kind of thing?

Now what they do is to go to a shopping centre, and find a similar car (same make and colour), and then they steal that car and put on your number plates. As you have not reported your plates stolen, and the stolen car is not using its own number plates, the Police are stymied as to what to look for.

You better report your plates stolen (I think the law does provide for this, it is a must not a "if you like").

ps, what make and model is your car? The law now makes provision that all new cars sold after 2010 must have their number plates secured to the car by rivets on to the number plate holder AND the number plate holder must be secured to the bodywork (behind the bumper) with self locking bolts.

I have heard that they follow you and show the plates(as if they picked them up)and when you stop they jack you, obviously not there plan, but it happens

Keep the police case number somewhere! Same thing happened to me a couple of years back - reported it to the police and when the traffic fines started rolling in I just wrote back quoting the police case number and never heard any more about the fines. (They put the plates on a similar model and colour car to mine...)

Thanks for your replies. I reported it to the coppers and am going to get replacement plates today. I'm going to see if it can reregister the car with a different reg number - even go personalized if I have to... I was thinking something along the lines of BADMOFO GP! If you can't beat them... right?
